How can a snake kill so silently, that the one kid didn't wake the other? And isn't it unusual for a snake to kill two victims?
It would normally kill, and then try to swallow it's victim.

But how can a snake strangle those kids in complete silence? To choke off their ability to cry out, it would need to get it's coil around the neck without waking the victim, or so quickly that the first child didn't have a chance to wake the other.

If I was investigating, I would be looking very very very carefully at how this happened. It might be right, but it sounds nearly impossible.
It does seem odd. But perhaps one child tried to rescue the other?

Otherwise, you'd expect to find the snake trying to swallow the first child.

You can introduce it as "Here is mon goose" - that should do the trick.

Just saw it on the BBC news and it's odder still.
The shop owner says that the snake fell through the ceiling of the bedroom, there was a big hole in the ceiling.
Yes, that would make a snake very grumpy, but it would have made a hell of a noise, you would think.

Makes you wonder who was with the kids, and why didn't the kids wake up, or the carer?

But foul play sounds unlikely too. Just weird. Were the kids locked in the bedroom? Most people don't even close the door on small kids.

I would get that owner in a room and grill him. When did the snake escape? When did he know? It could have disappeared days previously, in which case he could be facing a manslaughter charge.

It sort of sounds likely, if the snake disappeared a few weeks previous, and had been hiding out, it might have been starving and very aggressive.

What does this say about Canadian society in general?

Only in Canardia! This would never happen in a proper, civilized country...

At this stage, I'd take anything that the shop owner says with a pinch of salt, since - as you say - he is almost certainly going to be in a world of legal bother.

Agreed. The BBC said that he is a family friend.
They played a comment from him, when he mentioned the big hole in the ceiling, and finding the boys dead. He sounded very matter of fact, no real clue in his voice that he was devastated, or even upset.

Of course, you can't tell too much from one short sound-only statement, but he certainly was not a wreck.

Of course you would be. How would an innocent psycho avoid the same problem though?

I'm with you on the how in the hell is this even possible?

But, the children are young and would definitely be unable to resist a big powerful snake. They are absurdly strong. If the boys were laying together and the snake fell on them I imagine it would be over -really it's too terrifying. Those poor boys, I'd want that shop keepers fucking head.

The story reeks of bullshit. An Internet search for the owner of the snake reveals the following news item :tea:

http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/nb/news-nouve ... 03-eng.htm
On Tuesday, November 1, 2011, 27-year-old Jean-Claude Savoie, of Shippagan, appeared in Caraquet Provincial Court for a bail hearing. Savoie is currently accused of sexual assault with a weapon, sexual assault, assault with a weapon and other infractions. The incidents allegedly occurred between 2003 and 2006.

Savoie has been released by Provincial Court Judge Finn on a number of conditions. Savoie will reappear in court on November 29, 2011, to enter a plea.
So I guess a snake belonging to a violent sex predator could have killed kids, but if I'm honest, I think the violent sex predator probably did it.

 Wow. Given that information, WTF were the kids doing there in the first place, snake or no snake?
