Did Ayn Rand Own a Gun?

Post by Robert_S » Sat Aug 03, 2013 10:07 pm

And if she did, what kind?
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Try here.
The following remarks from the Journals of Ayn Rand: "With modern technique and modern weapons at its disposal, a ruthless minority can hold millions in slavery indefinitely. What can one thousand unorganized, unarmed men do against one man with a machine gun?" This passage could be taken to suggest that weapons in individuals' hands are necessary to fight against tyranny (an argument sometimes used against gun control).

One that would be good for standing alone against the whole world. A work of human brilliance and innovation, a towering monument to the intellectual spirit of self-interest and the striving of indomitable individual human will against overwhelming odds. It would be loud. It would smoke a lot.

Given her ambiguity as mentioned on the website referred to, I doubt she did own a gun.
