While Western nations have some moral obligation to assist refugee seekers, they aren't under an obligation to settle them in their borders.

The ones who sign up to the UN convention on refugees are, however, obligated to ensure they are resettled to a safe place. PNG isn't a safe place. The fact that we accept refugees from PNG makes this whole thing utterly farcical.

Western countries are all going to face the same dilemma in the end.
Either they find a perfect way of distinguishing genuine refugees from the cheating lying ones, and of sending them straight back home, ( which nobody has managed yet ) or they will have to change or withdraw from the refugee convention.

Australia should be applauded for making a genuine effort to deter the cheats, and provide safety for the genuine. But that option isn't there for many countries.
I would withdraw right now from the convention, and remove all legal rights to asylum, and just have a system of scrutinising those who still arrive, with no legal rights at all, but just done at the discretion of the government.

The tiny percentage who were genuine would still have a chance, if their case was clear. The rest would go straight back.

The asylum system is like self-service shops. They operate on trust. If huge numbers of people decided to help themselves and not pay, shops would have to scrap self-service and go back to keeping everything behind a counter. It would be worse for everybody, but they would be forced to do it.

That's what will happen to the refugee system. It's fine, until too many people start abusing it. Then you are forced to dump it.

The system in Australia is fine. We take in an exceedingly small amount of refugees and the vast majority of them are Hazaris from A'stan and P'stan. Also Tamils from Sri Lanka. These are people fleeing real persection. Once again, don't think you can translate Europe's problems across to the situation in Australia. It is a totally different situation. I'm sure you'll block your ears and go la-la-la-la. But the fact is, it is very hard to get to Australia and there are only small amounts arriving compared to the rest of the world. And those that arrive are fleeing war (largely caused by us) and ethnic persecution.
