Ask John Profumo.

I couldn't be bothered reading the link. Is the opt-out still daily? Either way, ridiculous conservative moralising. Fuck them.

Gesture politics at its most futile.

Here's the BBC version, if you don't want to swell the DM's ad revenue: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-23401076

What I find saddening, but not surprising, is the political lumping together of extreme stuff that the vast majority find appalling, with the regular, inoffensive stuff that I suspect even most politicians have made use of from time to time.

You misunderstand completely.

The Tories are standing up for kink. If something isn't forbidden, it isn't kinky.

It isn't much fun dressing up like a Monty Python judge and getting your arse whipped in a fancy London Mews if there isn't a risk of social and professional notoriety should you be discovered!

This has been very badly handled. Not least the conflation of 'ordinary' porn and child porn and an implicit assumption somewhere in this policy (one they have no mandate for to begin with as it happens) that one can lead to the other.

However frankly I do this it should be harder for the average ten year old who might be starting to be curious to view some of the stuff out there. I also think that parents should be able to keep their own kids away from it and not have it present in their own households if they don't want it. As it is most people who have broadband have an automated porn pipe direct to their screens.

As ever the devil will be in the detail. It will be interesting to see how that goes.

There are free and pay for tools that they can use quite effectively.

Actually not very effectively and a determined kid can get past that stuff anyway. As it stands the situation is more or less the equivalent of having an adult book shop in your house whether you, the parent, want it or not ans your kid being able to access it without you knowing it.

This sort of stuff will come thicker and faster as time goes on. It's stuff that they calculate will get more votes than it loses.
Especially among the more right-wing element of the electorate, who have recently been dallying with UKIP, the UK independence party, which wants to take Britain out of the EU.

They will have a hit list of various vote-getters leading up to the next election. It used to be more liberal stuff, to convince the gullible that they are less rabid right-wing. But now, with UKIP in the frame, they will be including more right-wing stuff as well.

Clamping down ( a little bit ) on porn should get a few blue-rinsed old ladies back out voting Tory, rather than staying home, or voting UKIP.
Before UKIP, they could rely on these votes, without having to pander to them, but times have changed.

People will just get round it with proxies so its pretty useless as a form of censorship anyway, but I suppose the blue rinse brigade won't know that. Reminds me of when they censored Sinn Fein and then had their words read out by the voice of an actor.

Yeh, that was possibly the most ludicrous episode ever in broadcasting.
The Broadcasters definitely missed a trick there.

I would love to have had Julian Clary dubbing the words of Ian Paisley, and Graham Norton doing Gerry Adams.
It would have really been TV gold.

That might make sense in terms of left-right generalisations, but it doesn't apply properly to the parties you're trying to apply it to.

UKIP are generally (opposition to same-sex marriage being the noted exception) highly socially libertarian. In fact they're probably the closest thing we have in the UK to a libertarian party. They have generally always supported things like decriminalising drugs, and have opposed monitoring of the internet and extension of centralised control over it. So it doesn't make any sense to say that the tories are doing this to appeal to UKIP voters.

It's not a simple left-right-far right issue.
