Australia and refugees

Post by Tero » Sun Jul 21, 2013 11:54 am

Asylum seekers who arrive by boat would continue to have their refugee claims assessed in Australia and at detention camps in Papua New Guinea and Nauru.

Australia would help genuine refugees settle in Papua New Guinea — a diverse tribal society of more than 800 languages and 7 million people who are mostly subsistence farmers. Those who are found not to be genuine refugees could return to their home countries or another country other than Australia.
Does Auatralia own Papua or how does this worK?

Short of the surface of the Sun, I can think of few places I'd rather be interned in less than Papua New Guinea.

The asylum seekers are forced to wear aloha shirts and eat incredibly spicy food.

I don't blame the Ozzies at all.

What proportion of migrants are genuinely in danger. Fuck-all. It's poverty driving it.
They are in genuine danger in those poxy little boats. So ironically, by deterring them from trying, the Ozzies are probably saving lives.

I don't blame people for trying at all. But that's no reason to let it go on. Genuine asylum seekers are few and far between, these days. And the fake ones are to blame for the treatment that genuine ones now get.
The only thing that governments have done wrong is not to stamp out fake asylum seeking as soon as it started.
I certainly don't blame them for doing now, what they should have done a long time ago.

"The Ozzies" are by no means unanimously in favour of Rudd's new policy. When I looked at the Avaaz petition opposing it at five this morning, it had attracted 3500 signatures. Five hours later this number has increased by 11,000, and there are not many sigs at all that were contributed from people overseas.

95% of all asylum seekers to Australia get granted refugee status. You are simply wrong.

They should let as many in as possible anyway, on the off-chance that some of them are good at cricket :hehe:

I certainly don't support it, and I suspect a lot of the left don't. It's a dirty cynical political ploy to win over the racist centrists who were going to vote for the Coalition. The plan is to send these people from the third world to the third world. Great plan.
But its new policy could be an even bigger disaster in the making. What exactly do we think refugees are going to do in Papua New Guinea with its unemployment “crisis”, entrenched poverty, high crime levels, high levels of infant mortality, rampant corruption, poor healthcare and tropical diseases. If we are shipping asylum seekers off there and paying for the resettlement of those who are genuine refugees, are we still responsible for what happens to them?

PNG's GDP/capita is about $2000.

Im with mistermack here. if they were thaty desperate they wouldnt be whining about settling in the nearest third world shithole. The fact that they will bypass a load of safe countries just to get to a first world one dissolves all sympathy I may have had
Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.
