Strange American Verdicts
Following the Zimmerman verdict, I wonder if anyone has any more examples of ludicrous US verdicts.
The next silliest that I can find after the Zimmerman verdict is a monkey, that was convicted for smoking, in South Bend, Indiana, in 1924. The monkey was ordered to pay a fine of $25 plus costs, which was a heck of a lot of money for a monkey, back in 1924.
Weirder still, they then passed a law making it illegal to force a monkey to smoke in Indiana.
So it's not just Florida.
Post your own examples here.

Can't think of a strange American verdict though I can think of a couple of British ones.

Yeh, those are ample proof that the powers that be can get whatever verdict they choose, in reality.Animavore wrote:Can't think of a strange American verdict though I can think of a couple of British ones.

If you want a pair, a mobster was acquitted of paying a bribe that a judge was convicted of taking.

Here's one that's exactly as ludicrous:mistermack wrote:Following the Zimmerman verdict, I wonder if anyone has any more examples of ludicrous US verdicts.

Which is to say, they're not ludicrous at all, of course, and seem to be correct verdicts. It's just that when it was a black neighborhood watch guy shooting a white teen in self defense, no one got up in arms about it.

Black woman attempts to stand her ground. However, warning shots are illegal, you have to shoot the guy.

That's basically correct. Any good gun course will teach you never to fire warning shots. If you're not ready to kill the target, don't pull the trigger.Tero wrote:However, warning shots are illegal

Don't unholster if you don't intend to fire, don't fire if you don't intend to hit, aim for center of mass.Warren Dew wrote:That's basically correct. Re: Strange American Verdicts
It's the combination of guns for sale everywhere, like candy-bars, and 20 years for firing a warning shot that is so ludicrous.Tero wrote:Black woman attempts to stand her ground. However, warning shots are illegal, you have to shoot the guy.

It's like making candy legal to buy, but illegal to eat.
She obviously went wrong by telling the truth. If she had said that she shot in self-defence, but missed, she would have been ok. It's ironic that cold blooded killers like Zimmerman will always have their story ready, whereas scared women will not.
In any case, it's another dumb sentence, if not a verdict.
If american judges are that stupid, it proves my point about americans in general.
Far too stupid to own guns.
