Creepy Love Child Story

Post by Coito ergo sum » Thu Jul 18, 2013 7:55 pm

O.k. http://www.politico.com/story/2013/07/s ... ml?ml=po_r - it took me some time to figure this one out. But, the way read it, a guy by the name of Brinks married some woman back in 1985. In 1988, they had a child named Victoria. The couple divorced in 1989, and Victoria is now 25 years old. Some years back, a Congressman by the name of Cohen came to believe that he was the father of Victoria. He had apparently had an affair with Victoria's mother in 1988, and the timing was right. The mother apparently thought so too, and they told Victoria about the connection, and proceeded as if Congressman Cohen was the father (only nobody bothered to tell Mr. Brinks, who all the time thought he was the father of Victoria).

Eventually, Mr. Brinks found out about the supposed affair way back in 1988 and the allegation that Cohen was really the father of his daughter. He also learned that Victoria and the mother kept the whole Cohen connection secret on purpose, so that Mr. Brinks would not find out.

Lo and behold, though, they finally did a DNA test and it revealed that Mr. Brinks was, in fact, the father and Cohen was not the father.

Weirdly, Congressman Cohen "still loves Victoria" (who isn't anything to him in reality and is someone else's daughter...) and when asked questions about it by a female reporter, he refused to answer questions saying "you're very attractive, but I'm not going to answer questions..." or words to that effect.

As an aside, It took me a while to find out what party affiliation Cohen is -- he's a Democrat -- which I strongly suspected because in any scandal involving a Democrat, they never specify his party. They just say "Rep. Stephen Cohen," where "Rep." stands for Representative. If he was a Republican, they'd put that right up front.

I don't see why it is strange that he still loves her. For years he thought she was his daughter. Very few humans can turn off their feeling like a light switch. I would find it stranger if he was able to truthfully disavow all feelings for her at the drop of a hat.

What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

It wasn't for that many years -- it was like 3 years -- Victoria was like 22 years old when he began thinking she was his daughter.

Doesn't change the fact that the news media in general very often simply refer to Democratic Congressmen as "Rep. So-and-So" when that person is in a scandal.

FoxNews does a lot of shit, but FoxNews is just one station out of a dozen all news channels on cable, and is also not print media.

No more or less possible than with yourself. Do you have confirmation bias on this issue?

When a politician is in trouble and the party is not identified, it a safe bet to assume that the missing letter is a Big “D,” as in this AP piece.

How were other politicians identified? Nancy Pelosi is identified as “Pelosi, D-Calif.” John Boehner is identified as “House Republican Leader John Boehner of Ohio.” But Jefferson is not a Democrat, just “Louisiana congressman William Jefferson.” Strange how that works, huh?

That happens a lot. But, I haven't collected piles of examples.

And that source isn't biased, of course. :fp:

Thing is, Republicans are the ones in bed with a certain variety of church people.

When Bush is proposing a constitutional amendment to "protect the sanctity of marriage", adultery becomes a little more relevant to the Republican side.

When Ronald Reagan courted the fundie vote, he made this bed for his party.

What does bias have to do with whether the AP did not identify the party affiliation? They either did or they didn't and the AP material is linked there.
