Africa... cradle of civilization and basket case for the rest of time.

Not necessarily.
The first heart-transplant was done in Africa. And millions of americans get circumcised still. All to please the big ju ju in the sky.
There ain't THAT much difference.

Yeah, I'm not arguing in favor of circumcision, and a LOT of great firsts came out of Africa.

It's present and future however? Grim.

I've never been there. But I'm not sure that it's as grim as we are led to believe. You only hear about the bad bits.
India would rival Africa in the poverty stakes. Especially if you include Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The population of Africa is almost exactly the same as India, and I'd be surprised if there is much difference in the poverty levels.
But I'd bet on Africa's future against India. It has much more land, natural resources etc.
What India has in it's favour though, is a single central government, so the inherent stability is what makes all the difference.
At the moment.

I don't think population density is Africa's problem, but an ongoing history of social and political instability, war, and upheaval. Poverty is a terrible thing too, but poverty with underlying instability is the kiss of death.

Sounds like Detroit. Surely things aren't THAT bad?

On the upside for Detroit, no VHF. :thinks:

Detroit is apparently about to declare bankruptcy.
