Jet crash-lands at San Francisco airport

A Boeing 777 aircraft has crash-landed at San Francisco international airport.

There is no word so far on casualties. The aircraft operated by the South Korean airline Asiana had taken off from Seoul and was on the runway, with plumes of smoke rising from it.

Pictures posted on Twitter showed passengers jumping down the inflatable emergency slides and leaving the area.

Firefighters and rescue teams are at the scene. The cause of the emergency is not known.

There were reportedly 12 crew and 290 passengers on board - the Boeing 777 can carry as many as 300 passengers.

While the sequence of events remains unclear, it appeared the plane landed and then crashed on San Francisco International Airport's Runway 28, said Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Laura Brown.

Footage of the scene showed debris strewn on the runway and smoke pouring from the long-range jet.

Passenger David Eun tweeted a picture of people jumping out of the plane and wrote: "I just crash landed at SFO. Tail ripped off. Most everyone seems fine. I'm ok. Surreal..."

Wow... it looks like it hit tail-first at the beginning of the runway, and there's just a debris field from that point to the wreckage. It's amazing that anyone made it out alive.

Lotta smoke from what I see on the SF Chronicle's site. Whole airport shut down... glad I'm not over there today.

By accounts, it would seem that at least some people managed to get out before the fire. Still, it was described by people at quite a remove as a, "popping sound", and then a fireball. At some point the center fuel tank went up (judging by pics), and burned out the center of the plane to some extent.

Plane may have clipped the seawall on landing.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

Got one right now. Daughter of the other one. So far, it hasn't helped Koreans focus on their parking skills, though.

Planes are normally safe aren't they? :nervous:
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

This one has crashed, so it's statistically impossible for another one to crash for a bit. That's how stats work.

Like that Oklahoma State Senator said about Moore, just days before a second EF-5 hit the town.

It really is a testament to engineering that so many people came out of that relatively unscathed.
