Yeah, he added it in to the 5th edition. Its generally accepted that that 1st edition was the best. He used it to mean "best adapted for the immediate local environment"

Well, preservation of favourable variations, ie those best adapted to the immediate local environment. Charlie should probably have left it at the 1st edition as most of his subsequent tinkering made the book less clear.
