I wonder if any of those Justices made mention that the Federal government has long had a hand in marriage laws, most notably against bigamy.

Actually, most notably against miscegenation.

Beyond church religious belief, marriage began to be regulated by the Monarch in order to preserve the purity and position of the aristocracy. Whom you married was of utmost importance to systems of government that relied on birthrights as the selector for power.

Thus, a noblewoman was not free to marry just anyone, especially not a commoner, but rather was traded off as a piece in a generational chess-game of alliances and aristocratic power.

Sans aristocracy, like the US after the Revolution, marriage was regulated specifically to prevent mixing (which is what "miscegenation" means) of races. Until quite recently, in historical terms, it was illegal for blacks and whites to marry. It wasn't until the mid 60's that miscegenation laws were found to be unconstitutional.
