Re: Judge Tells Women to Dress Appropriately in Courtroom
Little by little, I hope the need for formal business attire (as defined by suits and ties for men) will die away, as many other out-dated customs have...
Having said that, I am not saying that a complete free-for-all in attire should occur in situations such as courtrooms, but simply that we don't have to be rigid...

Actually, for formal situations, I'm only suggesting a minor relaxation, such as slacks, shirts without ties and sports jackets. Neat casual, perhaps would be the word. Not jeans and t-shirts...Collector1337 wrote:What should we wear instead?JimC wrote:Little by little, I hope the need for formal business attire (as defined by suits and ties for men) will die away, as many other out-dated customs have...

It's just that the locked in conventions of the suit and tie seems so archaic to me, these days...

And then down the road, slacks and shirts without ties and sports jackets will seem "archaic" and so on. Pretty soon we'll all just be wearing sweatpants and flip-flops all the time.JimC wrote:Actually, for formal situations, I'm only suggesting a minor relaxation, such as slacks, shirts without ties and sports jackets. Don't get me wrong, this isn't an issue I actually give a shit about, but it's what will probably happen.
In court, you'd think you'd want to be in a suit and tie, since you know, you're being judged, and the rest of your life could be on the line.

In the current situation, If I was a defendant, I'd certainly put on a tie and a jacket, at least...Collector1337 wrote:And then down the road, slacks and shirts without ties and sports jackets will seem "archaic" and so on. But it still seems silly...
I would hope that some sort of happy medium could occur without rEv's slippery slope. I'm not into goats...

Okay, so you admit that there should be a line drawn somewhere. So, why shouldn't it be drawn where it is?JimC wrote:Little by little, I hope the need for formal business attire (as defined by suits and ties for men) will die away, as many other out-dated customs have...

If you want to relax it to slack, shirt and sports-coat, what arguments can you give for justifying that level of dress that cannot be applied to any other standard of dress?

Re: Judge Tells Women to Dress Appropriately in Courtroom

This is how most newspaper pictuers from courtrooms look here nowadays. The accused is hidden in a hoody, as long as there are photographers present, I believe they are required to show their faces once the court procedure starts (Have even seen people in suits, with a hoody thrown over their head.
Being allowed to throw off your coat ant tie if the space is not well airconditioned would be a minimum for me. I wouldn't mind a lawyer in proper straight shorts and short sleeved shirt, on a hot summers day.
Luckily I am still working on the scientific side of diplomacy. There business casual is already widely accepted. Although the old Kiwi that came to a meeting in a dark suit and crocks did get some weird looks (don't know if he had lost his luggage, or had badly blistered feet, or something):hehe:

But seriously, the zeitgeist is moving on. Once, dress standards were a class-based shibboleth, used as a restrictive process to cow the underclasses.
We have moved on from then; why shouldn't a slow but steady movement to more casual dress apply?
