Surely that's the same with any law??
You pass a law in the hope that people won't break it. But if they do, they pay a price.

Anyway, how is he curtailing their ability to commit the offences? He's just saying that if you do, you pay a legal price.
It's hardly practical to try to stop people, BEFORE they have offended.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

Wait, isn't Junno always talking about the fact that loads of young, intelligent, capable people are going to need to be supported by the state because there won't be enough jobs? The state could just employ them to watch the rest of us. :plot:

I don't mind them trying to make it harder for kids to watch porn, in fact I support it, but what bothers me is that they seem to be conflating three issues:

1) Access to illegal child porn and its apparent (and unproven) ability to motivate nasty people to assault children.
2) Keeping children away from inappropriate sexual imaginary.
3) Reducing the pervasiveness of porn on the net.

..and fourthly I sense that old political chestnut reappearing when it should be long dead - censorship pure and simple.

I agree.
It seems to me that he would deny people the ability to break the law...which is something entirely different.

I challenge anyone here to provide reliable, independent (ie, not police) statistics that surveillance cameras prevent crime (as opposed to detecting it after the fact).

Proving a negative. I'll be right on that.

Well I had a quick scan of some of the research and studies as I am interested in this subject. You won't be surprised to hear that the picture is 'mixed'. Sometimes it works in reducing crime and sometimes it doesn't. The key seems to be public awareness of the cameras. If people forget they are there they tend to ignore them.

I remember the police in our area hooting that cameras outside a row of shops in Blacon (a local council estate) had practically eradicated the drug dealing 'problem' there.
In fact, all that had happened is that the dealers had moved about 5 yards around a corner out of sight and were just as prolific as ever. I know this because I used to score there quite regularly.

I'm reminded of the old saying "Locks keep honest people honest."
