Re: Obama Department of Justice Takes Ass. Press phone recor
9-11
The Bush admin did not start listening to phone calls and screening e mails till after.
I don't have a problem with Gubment monitoring my communications for security purposes, as long as they do not use any if it in court. I would even let them use GPS to track cars of suspects.
When they interfere with my normal activities I will get mad. But that will not happen, since no criminal activities happen. I have not even cheated on taxes. I guess I should learn that from some rich folks. After I get rich.
I want the Gubment to monitor anyone with more than two guns. Three if that is too much of a work load.

What does any of this have to do with the government intimidating the press because the press was reporting stuff the government didn't want them to report?Tero wrote:9-11

For someone who bitches about the Bush administration, though, you advocate a far more intrusive system than even the Bush Administration ever suggested. It's like "The Bush Administration trampled our civil rights! But... I'd go even further than they did...."
Your philosophy here though is no different than the people who think it's fine if the cops search houses without warrants or search in the trunks of cars without probable cause -- the old "what does it matter, if I'm not doing something wrong." Shortsighted position to take, in my view, as it simply creates a system where the cops can do whatever they want and you have to comply, even if you're not up to anything wrong. It is ripe for abuse.

They can search my trunk all they like, as long as they do not use it in court.
Its notthe searching that is most often the problem but arresting the wrong person. Not good use of tax money.
I will let Gubment search journalist enails for any reporting outside, not for domestic matters, unless terror is suspected.
There's going to be thousands of conspiracy theorists to monitor too. It would be easier to take their guns and car keys, but we can't do that.
This is all inevitable as we move toward multiculture and socialism.

Of course they're going to use it in court if they can.Tero wrote:They can search my trunk all they like, as long as they do not use it in court.
And, if they don't use it in court, they use the information to conduct further investigations to get other evidence to convict you. Like, they find some evidence in your trunk that leads them to want to search your house.
Different issue altogether. It IS the search that is the problem when the search is without a good reason. Arbitrary searches are wrong even if the searches are only of innocent people who are never arrested. They are especially abhorrent in those cases, because it is the innocent people who ought to be left alone.Tero wrote:

What does this even mean? You will let government search journalist emails for "any reporting outside?" What is "reporting outside?"Tero wrote: I will let Gubment search journalist enails for any reporting outside, not for domestic matters, unless terror is suspected.
Look - it's quite simple -- the government can search a journalist's emails if it has probable cause to believe that the journalist is engaged in criminal activity. They fill out a warrant and describe with particularity what is to be searched and what they are looking for. Why do they need some right to just look anywhere they want?
I think you are trolling me now. Poe's Law in full effect.Tero wrote:

What is "reporting outside the US?" -- writing stories for publication outside the US? Or, writing stories about stuff that occurs outside the US? Or, reporters situated outside the US?Tero wrote:Reporting outside the US, duh!
Silly argument is silly, Tero.

News story being covered is outside the US. Iraq, Syria, Turkey. Those can be critical to intelligence. Once the cat is out of the bag, send all the war correspondents you like. When the whole world is already on to our tricks.

You want the government to be able to search journalists anytime, arbitrarily, if they are covering news stories outside the US. Makes sense.

No, they need a court order, for a specific jornalist and a specific story.
We don't have well armed citizen militias and patriots abroad being vigilant abroad. We have Gubment to do that.

Now you've back-pedaled. Before it was "doesn't matter if the government searches as long as they don't use it in court" -- now you want a court order. Well, that now further restricts what government needs -- now they generally need a warrant. You want to up that to a court order. You're all over the map.Tero wrote:No, they need a court order, for a specific jornalist and a specific story.

Yes, they had court orders. They can use the information for their own security purposes. The purpose is not to put journalists in jail or find cannabis in your trunk. They are after the informants of the journalists. Those prople can be deported, for example, if Obama wants that and they violated their visa.

They had warrants, like for the phones of the parents of the news reporter....lol.Tero wrote:Yes, they had court orders. They can use the information for their own security purposes. You were advocating for no warrants or orders being necessary. You appear to have modified your position on that.
I am fine with the government being able to get a warrant of even a journalist if they have probable cause. However, they need to have probable cause -- not just a "we're looking to plug leaks, so grab all the AP phone records for 60 days and see who is calling them..." That's a fucking dragnet.

I'm fine with warrants even with probable cause. Any journalist not associated with case, or not leading to info, is dropped off the monitoring list. List to be reviewd daily by head spy dude on the case.

Of course you're fine with warrants even with probable cause. Warrants are issued on probable cause. Who wouldn't be fine with that?
Can you please write in English? You said that you didn't care who they monitored, as long as they didn't use it in court. Now you're fine with warrants needed on probable cause, which was the point of mine you opposed. Now you agree

Sorry, this is iPhone tapping here. I gotta work too. So where did Obama go wrong again? They had a justifiable mission.
