Well I got bullied at school and made nitoglycerine and nearly blew myself up and the chemistry teacher even gave me the materials to do so. Of course we were one of the few British schools that had its own rifle range and armoury . Someone did pinch a rifle and shoot a teacher with it but he wasn't too seriously hurt by hey even with American school shootings no one has actually had kid use a school gun to ensure he got an extension on his homework

I was a new kid at a lot of different schools, that's what you get for being a semi-military brat (Dad was an engineer who worked mostly for the Air Force all over South East Asia). When you're a new kid you get bullied, particularly if you come in the middle of the school year after all the cliques have solidified. You learn quickly to fight back; you really have no choice if you want to get through it with all your teeth. I wasn't very big, so I had to learn to go completely berserker on them, just go for it with no consideration for your own safety. It usually took only once, sometimes twice, and then they left you alone. Had a problem at one school in Daytona Beach, they ganged up on me after I'd fought one kid, got in a circle and kicked my ass pretty good. So I picked one of the medium sized ones, and every time they bothered me I'd kick the shit out of him. Didn't take long for him to talk his mates into leaving me alone. Pretty funny, actually. After one occasion he told me it wasn't "fair" to pick only on him. Lol.

The kids I felt sorry for were the ones that never learned that lesson. I remember one kid who got off the bus one stop early and ran like a rabbit all the way home, because if he got off at his stop he would get the shit beat out of him every single day. Sad situation, he's probably a really fucked up person now. If you don't learn to stand up for yourself then you end up a punching bag for every pimply faced adolescent sadist out there. If you're OK with that then you're one fuck of a lot more Zen than I am.

It's worth adding that that applies to non-physical abuse and aggression as much as physical - if you don't learn to stand up for yourself, then you end up a metaphorical punching bag for every potential abusive romantic and sexual partner, boss, toxic relative etc. etc.

It'd be nice to live in a world where everything is worked out fairly with due consideration of everyone's rights and deserts, so each individual doesn't have to worry about all that themselves. Or at least where the overarching powers of authority, teachers, police, lawmakers etc. are so omniscient, efficient and incorruptible that one doesn't have to worry too long about the occasional lapse in justice before it's remedied. Maybe one day human civilisation will ascend to that level and people will look back and laugh at the idea that anyone ever had to "defend themselves".

But the fact is that life now is nothing like that. You can be the best, most fair-minded person in the world, and you'll still spend your life coming into contact with cunts who just want to fuck you over. You gotta be able to deal with them, and not by appealling to a better side that doesn't exist.

I also got the bullying treatment, over many years from one particular individual who pretty much fucked up my childhood. It stopped the moment I lost it and tore at him like a Tasmanian Devil on speed with nothing to lose. That phenonmenon is pretty widely recognised.

Good points, Beatsong. Physical bullying is only one aspect of it. The rash of suicides reported among teenage and preteen girls recently are usually psychological bullying rather than physical. Sometimes it's just repeated nastiness on social media. I think we forget, from our more "mature", adult perspective, just how devastating verbal and psychological abuse is to adolescents. I don't know how you convince them to not give a fuck, maybe that's something that just comes with age. I truly don't give a shit what 99.99999999% of the world population thinks about me, but that wasn't the case when I was 14.

The world is chock-a-block with assholes, from the jerk who cuts you off in traffic to the asshole neighbor playing loud music at 2 AM. In many cases the best reaction is to take a deep breath and chalk it up to modern life. In other cases you have to respond more forcefully by calling the coppers or getting lawyers involved. But in some cases, where your personal safety or the safety of others is at risk, you have to resort to violence or the threat of violence.

It's well known that kids from abusive families often repeat those patterns of abuse, either as abusers themselves or by getting involved with abusers. I wonder how many bullied kids who never learned to stand up for themselves are now in shitty, abusive relationships, or working for shitty, abusive bosses? If you don't defend yourself, both physically and psychologically, then you stand a good chance of remaining a victim.
