1858 Remington cap-and-ball, .44 cal. Fun to play around with. Surprisingly accurate up to about 150 yards. I used to hunt with it during black powder season.

Yeah. Towards the end of their useful career, they were refitted to hold cartridges. These days you can buy reproductions and things like quick-loaders, quick-cappers, quick-patches (to seal the chambers), etc, so reloading doesn't take half of your shooting time. Fun, but I wouldn't rely on them for much else. The gun shop in town is selling mint Yugoslavian SKS complete with bayonet for something around $250. They were reserve rifles and never fired. Wood furniture, but still pretty cool.

These days we have "smokeless" black powder. Still smokey, but not to the point where it cakes up on your hands. As far as I know, every cap-and-ball revolver has a removable chamber for exactly the reason you mention. And for cleaning, I guess. They gunk up in a heartbeat. I've never bothered with spares, though, because I was never in a high-pressure situation where I needed to reload quickly.
