Actually rich people in the UK can buy their care independently of the NHS now, and generally do. That is a confirmation of just how bad nationalized health care is, of course.

Hard to find fault with any of that.
It's the apparent milking of it for publicity that one might find fault with.
The shame is that the test she took is more expensive than most Americans can afford, and most insurance doesn't cover it. And I doubt they'd cover preventive surgery or reconstruction, generally, either. Not to mention the whole bugaboo of finding you carry this gene and having that become a pre-existing condition that insurance companies don't want to deal with.
Agreed with most of that. If you want, though, you can pay $99 for a test from 23andme, and it will report 3 of the more common BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations implicated in breast cancer.

Whether one would want to find out if one can't afford preventive surgery is another matter.

I don't think she milked it for publicity. It's the sort of information that would come out one way or another, and she chose to dictate the terms, which is smart. Plus, I think she's a woman on a mission in a lot of ways, this being no exception.

I've heard about 23andme. I'm not sure why she took the more expensive test (close to $3000, from what I read.) Is it more precise?

I do think her decision to go right ahead with the mastectomy once she found out she had the gene might have been in part influenced by the heartbreak of seeing her mother's slow death (i.e.- informed in part by emotion more than need.) But an 87% chance of getting very sick.... I can understand not wanting to live with that sort of time bomb ticking.

And yeah, most people can't afford to take elective preventive surgery, never mind cosmetic reconstruction immediately afterward. Not sure what good genetic testing would do for those who might simply get screened more frequently if they have a family history, rather than confirming that they're carriers...

Yeah, after I posted I looked around a bit. Lower than coffee or most sodas, but still significant, is what I gleaned...

Like I said, I drink plenty of caffeine. Caffeine makes me so very happy.

I don't usually like caffeine because in the long run it makes you more tired. But green tea is cheaper than blackberries or whatever else that has antioxidants.

We eat a lot of blueberries at my house. Lots of antioxidants, and they're great finger-food for Sprog.
Oh, and then there's the red wine.

Myriad Genetics' test may be more accurate, and it may also identify other, less common mutations to the gene. More importantly, it's considered a medical diagnostic test, which no one else can offer due to Myriad's patent on the gene. The patent is questionable, but 23andme isn't in the medical business so I don't think they're challenging it.
