Sounds like she just watched her mother die a long, painful death, and her children were scared it would happen to her. She found out it probably would happen to her, and did her best to stop it.

The shame is that the test she took is more expensive than most Americans can afford, and most insurance doesn't cover it. And I doubt they'd cover preventive surgery or reconstruction, generally, either. Not to mention the whole bugaboo of finding you carry this gene and having that become a pre-existing condition that insurance companies don't want to deal with.
She's brave, and it's sad she needed to cut off part of her body to stay healthy. But she's lucky she's rich.

Yeah, she's rich, and she got the best care in the world when she wanted it, no waiting. The reason for that is that the free market responds to consumer demand as it always does by providing more choices for the consumer, which means she had literally thousands of individual clinics and physicians to choose from for her care. She didn't have to wait 3 years for an MRI, only to be told that she's "too expensive" to treat...like women in the UK are with increasing frequency.
And all that competition means there's plenty of excess capacity, which allows less-wealthy people to access the same level of care by figuring out how to pay for it...like my friend with tongue cancer who asked his Catholic church to help. Within 48 hours of his request donations had been received to pay for the entire $55,000 procedure and post-surgery chemo treatment.
Now, please explain to me why SHE (or my friend) should die of breast cancer merely because SOMEONE ELSE doesn't have the money to afford top-notch care?

Ah. That's good news. The study doesn't seem to have specifically tested this on women who have that defective gene that AJ has, though, so I'm not sure that would have been an option. AJ is an atypical case, I think, and that study was done on a general population.
