With those odds, it almost seems hard to imagine why you wouldn't go for it.

Not sure about that, but once the cancer has progressed enough to detect, the dangers of metastasis kick in and you may wind up chasing it all around your body. Chemo, radiation, etc, in addition to the double mastectomy. I can see why she'd take the route she did.

Cancer in the future implies not only the likelihood of mastectomy , but also lymph node removal with possible future complications, chemo and ditto and radiotherapy and ditto, still with no guarantee of survival.

Metastasis means you are in the endgame and what is being offered is treatment rather than an attempted cure. Asssuming no spread beyond the lymph nodes, or if you are lucky not even that far, surgery, then radiotherapy as well as possibly chemo will be prescribed in an attempt to prevent recurrence, ( depending on the type of tumour) along with follow- up medication which can also have nasty side- effects.
