How the hell does "Outrage at Syrian rebel shown 'eating soldier's heart'" turn into an America bashing thread?

Every thread has some degree of America bashing in it. A Yerpeein, Canardian or Ozzian can hardly discuss an issue without making negative comparisons or references to the United States.Seabass wrote:How the hell does "Outrage at Syrian rebel shown 'eating soldier's heart'" turn into an America bashing thread?

It's only natural. The vassal states of the Roman empire all despised Rome, and often rose up in armed rebellions. We're slightly more civilized now.

You mean the war fought by contributing NATO nations (including Canada) based on the rapidly fading remnants of Cold War jingoism that put Saddam Husein squarely in power? That one?
Good example. Got any others?

What kind of nonsense is this? Hussein took power in 1979, and was squarely in power in 1990, and had been for over a decade. So to say that the Persian Gulf War put him in power is just plain wrong.
Also, the US fought the Persian Gulf War with token contributions from other nations. The US had more contributing support for the more recent 2003 Iraq War than it did in 1990 for the Persian Gulf War. The US put in half a million troops, and ran the whole show in 1990. Canada, no offense intended, didn't do jack shit. You had like 4,000 troops committed, with about 2700 in the Persian Gulf region and your planes flew 58 sorties. You might as well have sent a box of little green army men.
And, you mentioned WW2 as being the last war which the US won -- but, the US most certainly did not fight that one alone. So, if you're looking for a war that the US fought "alone" then you won't find many of them. We can't even say the Spanish American War, because we fought alongside Cuba, Katipunan and the Philipines. So, which is it? Did the US have to fight in a winning war, or are you looking for a war in which the US fought all by itself?
For the latter, we can point to the Invasion of Panama, which was a decisive US victory. However, to say that we did not win the Persian Gulf War in 1992 is ridiculous. We kicked the living shit out of Iraq in that war and accomplished every objective of the war. The objective of the war was NOT to unseat Saddam Hussein. That was EXPRESSLY not the objective. The objective was to kick him out of Kuwait, it was approved by the United Nations, and we followed the UN resolutions to the letter. It was a decisive victory for the UN forces, led by the United States.
Moreover, your characterization of the Gulf War as a NATO action is incorrect too. It was a coalition of United Nations forces.
Do try again. The Persian Gulf War was a decisive and overwhelming victory, and it was fought chiefly and led by the United States.
