It is perhaps possible for some form of democracy to co-exist with a non-authoritarian version of communism, but it would be a very different sort of society. Probably, we can't get there from here...

And not easy to achieve, given how hominids normally behave...

History suggests it's usually associated with authoritarian rule, and I think that is the likely outcome, but perhaps it is not impossible...

The proper ideology of communism and socialism is democratic. It's a far more pure form of democracy than we have now. The fact that it went pear shaped in the USSR/China et al doesn't support Warren's absolutist assertion.
