I blame the misuse of reason myself. Clean logical thinking allowed The Holocaust when it could have prevented it. It allows this because it isn't very deeply ingrained, and humans don't, at this time, have a smarter species to contend with and so they easily become dumb rule followers. Still logical but bereft of that extra something...the imaginative and irrational flare of thinking beyond the box.

The simple minded thinking of the likes of Scrumple miss the point entirely. Fox was suggesting that it was the drift away from religion and more reliance on 'reason' which led to the rise of Hitler and then the holocaust. This is patently not the case.

The danger is the rational mind is clever and sure of itself and yet cannot know everything. The existence of Nazi Science was a byproduct of rational thinking and whilst The Holocaust was a act of absolute barbarity it's organisation would not have been possible without the collusion of countless rational intellects at the time. Eugenics may be seen as wrong in hindsight yet at the time it was at the very pinnacle of scientific rational thought. Not saying we should dissolve into primitive thinking in order to prevent it happening again....there is a over-population crisis afterall.

You hear this argument from time to time, but I've never seen a good argument to explain how eugenics was supposedly "rational". Can you explain it?

What was used to kill the Jews was gas mostly and this was a byproduct of scientific thinking. I don't buy into it being a few madmen at the top hypnotizing a nation of fools. The Germans are far too smart for that. The monsters can think clean, this is the lesson of history.

Drone strikes have no more to do with science than ordinary military applications and a host of other non-military applications. What the hell are you on about?

Even The Great Depression which gave rise to the economic conditions which led to widespread resentment of the successful German Jewish minority had it's roots in new technology and idiotic faith in the ticker-tape driven stock markets of the time. Reason was that the bubble could not burst and all the problems had been solved since technology was progressive. Reason was wrong but it was still reason. Fox today isn't far wrong. It is a type or aspect of religion, or culture, which is introspective and contemplative which was lost in the false optimism of the dumbing up decade prior to the Holocaust. Even today it is a huge hole in the global culture that remains unfilled, a vacuum of the imagination and deep thinking we so desperately need to solve the issues of this time. There are too many cell phones and too few thinkers...it will happen again and this time it will be far worse.

Greed is always there. Reason made the technology which allowed it to become a issue with the potential to cause a worldwide socio-economic collapse. Technology was a product of interested reasoning people.
