3-D printers have officially gone mainstream. You can now get one at Staples for $1,300.

Staples (SPLS, Fortune 500) says it is the first major U.S. retailer to sell a 3-D printer. It began selling The Cube, made by 3D Systems (DDD), on Staples.com Friday, and the printer will hit "many" of the retailer's brick-and-mortar stores by June.

Not very long ago, the idea of going up to a machine, pressing a "hamburger" button and receiving a hamburger instantaneously seemed like something straight out of "Star Trek" or "The Jetsons." But with the advent of 3D food printing, that machine might be in kitchens very soon.

OK, what's the first thing you'd make with one of those things?

I assume the material would be rigid, so I'd make a stabilizer for my telescope's forks in order to minimize vibration. Probably.

I've got a design in my mind for a much better (easier to clean) computer fan filter than the ones I've got or can find online. I looked up some of the 3D printing services a while back to see if I could get it made for myself but it was problematic (much more expensive) to do something with the necessary combination of materials. I fully intend to make it though, when the technology gets there at the right price, - even if I no longer need it, just because I think it would be a good little design project.
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

Alibaba will grant your wishes PS.

3d Printing is awesome but the downside is soon we'll have hundreds of thousands of tonnes of more plastic crap to dump into the oceans or third world countries that are now landfills.

Seriously, yes. So, who's going to come up with a material that's easily recyclable/reusable/ecologically sound and what the bloody hell would it be?
