India man Sailendra Nath Roy dies during ponytail stunt

A Guinness World Record holder who attempted to cross a river in India suspended by his ponytail has died during the stunt.

Sailendra Nath Roy was crossing the Teesta river in West Bengal state on a zip wire attached to his ponytail when he suffered a heart attack.

In March 2011, Mr Roy was named as a Guinness World Record holder for travelling the farthest distance on a zip wire using hair.

He worked as a driver for the police.

Mr Roy was trying to cross the Coronation Bridge over Teesta river near Siliguri town suspended from a 600ft (183m) long zip wire at a height of 70ft (21.3m).

A large number of people had gathered on the bridge to watch the feat.

Eyewitnesses said that Mr Roy appeared to make no progress after covering about 300ft (90m).

"He was desperately trying to move forward. He was trying to scream out some instruction. But no one could follow what he was saying. After struggling for 30 minutes he became still," said Balai Sutradhar, a photographer, who was covering the stunt.

Police said he was hanging for nearly 45 minutes before he was brought down.

Did the hanging by the hair contribute to the heart attack, or would he have had one anyway?

And I thought lines like that were designed so one slid inexorably down, not stopping in the middle like a dangling participle...

Not really.
If his hair had given way, I would. But a heart attack can happen to anyone.

If he was making a living doing stunts, good luck to him. ( Late with that ).

Conditional on whether or not the stunt did the deed I think.

Risking your life for money may be stupid in a comfortable western country, but it might make good sense, in a country with not much welfare or healthcare, and life can be short and cheap.
Just a case of bad luck, I think.

Aye, I don't want to appear like some kind of hairetic, but they do say 'hair today, gone tomorrow.'

Turned out to be a really hair-raising stunt.
