If that's so.. it's more than a little disturbing.
It's called voluntary arbitration, and both parties have to agree to it. Of course people could be coerced into accepting it, and that is the source of some complaints.
It is still not legally binding if either party recants later or if it goes against the law of the land - same with jewish beth din courts. In real terms, religious "courts" have no greater powers than those bestowed on any club committee by its members. It is really only the belief of their adherents that gives them power.

Thank god.
I was worried/horrified that Islamic law had made headway in the UK for a while there.

At any right, if a party wants the authority of a court of law behind whatever decision, and for whatever reason, the law of the land, not the arbitration court's view of sharia, ought to be sole source for said decision... some judge needs disbarment.

The law of the land in the UK (and US) is for certain disputes in some areas 2 parties can voluntary resolve their differences without using civil public courts but private forums
It's a sensible law and it fact its the only way for a modern society to function, you really want a mod on these forum getting a court order to ban me?. I've agreed to the forum rules by being here.
The problem you get is people who are brainwashed/stupid and choose to resolve important matters with even more stupid people (ie 'sharia courts').
Short of saying every muslim is too stupid to make decisions for herself or just banning islam I'm not quite sure what the solution is. Maybe the US doesnt have this problem as it has more intelligent muslims or maybe it just happens in secret I don't know

I don't know about never, I think applying Sharia law for Muslims has some uses. Theft for instance.

A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.
