Muslims should not celebrate Anzac day because it is a "superficial, jingoistic" date that marks Australian colonial aggression against the Muslim world, according to radical Muslim group Hizb ut Tahrir.
Mainstream Muslim groups rejected the group's stance, saying Anzac day had nothing to do with religion.
Hizb ut Tahrir, banned in many countries but not Australia, says government requests for Islamic schools to note Anzac day is an unacceptable imposition of foreign values and history.
Australia, both in the past and now, "supports an international framework of deceit, exploitation and destruction led by the US and European powers".

"It is this ugly reality that is covered by superficial jingoistic celebrations based on crafted mythologies like the 'Anzac legend'," spokesman Uthman Badar said in a statement on Wednesday. He said the Gallipoli campaign was aggression by allied troops against the legitimate Islamic authority, the Ottoman Caliphate. "There is nothing for Muslims to celebrate about Australia's contribution to colonial aggression against the Muslim world.
Hizb ut Tahrir is a fringe group that opposes democracy and Muslim integration and wants to impose an Islamic superstate in all areas Muslims have ruled, from Spain across North Africa to the Middle East.
In Australia, the group – which says it rejects violence – has worked hard in universities to radicalise students, and has more influence in Sydney than Melbourne.
Ramazan Altintas, president of the Turkish sub-branch of the RSL, said: "These are stupid people. Anzac day is not celebrating, it is remembering. Johnny and Mehmet lost the lives on behalf of the Australian and Turkish community, and now we respect all those who lost their lives on behalf of their communities."
Australian Federation of Islamic Councils vice president Ikebal Patel, said Muslims like everyone else could benefit from the lessons of the past in avoiding future conflicts.
A member of the Islamic Council of Victoria said: "Because the Turks celebrate Anzac day, are they not Muslim? Muslims can celebrate Anzac day as part of their Australian identity."
