That's because he was detained for about 40 minutes and then released when it was determined he had no connection to the terrorists. Having him strip was a wise precaution, given the evident fact that the dead older brother was wearing a suicide explosive vest.

It's called "exigent circumstances" which permit the police to do any reasonable thing (short of killing someone) necessary in the hot pursuit of a criminal who poses a grave danger to the public. Being detained and disrobed because you bear a reasonable resemblance to a terrorist bombing suspect is entirely reasonable under the exigent circumstances exception.

I'm not questioning the arrest itself. Well, except that the cops allowed it to be filmed. I am questioning why the media had zero coverage of this.

Of Chechen ethnicity, it seems. It remains possible that part of what put them on this path was connections to Chechen islamists via the internet. The conflict with Russia was/is a very bitter one, with atrocities from both sides. Violence and trauma have a way of echoing down generations, and across a diaspora...

Even if such causal factors exist, it should go without saying that they do not excuse the violence in any degree, nor should such links taint the vast majority of such ethnic communities who have successfully integrated into western cultures.

I thought the uncle was really impressive, in that public interview he gave.

It certainly took guts, to speak at all, in the circumstances, and he hit exactly the right tone.

And you can tell from what he was saying that there was no common purpose of islamic fundamentalism there.
Those brothers might have settled on islam, as an excuse, but basically, they were just like any other pair of loonies, like the school shooters, or waco nutters. They just wanted to create mayhem, and any excuse will do. Some people are like that. It looks like the younger one was "turned" by the elder brother.

From a fairly disinterested position as a distant foreign observer of this, I really enjoyed the uncle's interview from an entertainment perspective. He basically just shouted and ranted. So funny to see someone just tell it like it is. I so wanted him, though, to lose his nut at some of the stupid repeated questions he got.
