Fuck. I don't know what to say. There's too much of this shit in the world.
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

This is the future, while ever people are left behind by social and political systems. Not to say they are right in doing this, but there are reasons for every action.

This is not borne out by the facts, which are obscured by the redefinition of poverty from am absolute definition to a relative definition.
Almost every society in the world is better off today than they were 50 years ago, with the exception of numerous benighted dictatorships and lawless territories.
Furthermore, terrorist acts have always been around. I'd be willing to bet that on a global scale, the number of terrorist atrocities around the world has stayed static if not reduced over the last 70 years.

I'm not sure about that Cormac. I think the problem is that it has escalated marginally in First world countries normally unaffected by it after a rather dramatic propaganda coup for the methodology in the earlier part of the century. It is sad, but I reckon a drunk lorry driver could have created a worse spectacle. As for whether the motivations have any real long term success, well history seems to suggest that terrorism is a path on the road to having your crazy bullshit legitimised.Cormac wrote:rEvolutionist wrote:This is the future, while ever people are left behind by social and political systems. Very surreal seeing co-workers who were at the marathon come in today. Very somber, quiet atmosphere.

This is correct in the 70s-90s but then it is was 9/11 that changed that, funding terror became a no-no and the IRA sued for peace instead.hadespussercats wrote:My understanding is that it's actually the opposite-- the money from Boston Irish dwarfed the amount that was raised in-country.Seabass wrote:Well, IRA support from Irish Americans in Boston was dwarfed by the amount of IRA support that came from Irish people living in Ireland. It's the simplest lesson, that mothers teach their kids. If YOU wouldn't like it, don't do it to others.
Now they know, perhaps they will think twice about exporting this shit to other people, in the future.
Probably not, though.
Or is this really just a case of you seeking every opportunity to give a big "fuck you" to the Americans?

Some tiny group people in Boston, as did people in many other cities around the world.mistermack wrote:The people of Boston blatantly financed the IRA bombs for many years.
Now they know what it feels like. Shame it's always the wrong ones that get hurt. That's what bombs are like.
Now "they" know what it feels like? The runners in the Boston Marathon, who mostly came from places other than Boston? The spectators? Who mostly came from places other than Boston?
THEY?
You don't know what bombs are like, dude. Stop pretending as if you do.

Nonsense. You don't know what you're talking about. Don't overblow the importance of Ireland to the United States or Boston. Almost nobody in Boston knew or cared what happened there. Those few that did were definitely condemned. The US government and the Massachusetts government definitely condemned contributions to the IRA. So fuck off. And, it was a so long ago, that to connect what happened yesterday to the Irish Republican Army is ridiculous. If you mentioned the IRA to 100 people on the street in Boston yesterday, they would have commented about how they hope their investments turn around. Douche.mistermack wrote:Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.Ian wrote:Fuck you. Fuck you for indiscriminately blaming all of Boston. I don't know the names of all those who donated to the IRA. But I do know that they didn't get condemned in Boston, when they went round the pubs with the collection tins.

Well, that and the fact that even in Northern Ireland, paramilitary violence was already a waning force, as more and more people there wanted nothing to do with it.HomerJay wrote:This is correct in the 70s-90s but then it is was 9/11 that changed that, funding terror became a no-no and the IRA sued for peace instead.hadespussercats wrote:My understanding is that it's actually the opposite-- the money from Boston Irish dwarfed the amount that was raised in-country.Seabass wrote:Well, IRA support from Irish Americans in Boston was dwarfed by the amount of IRA support that came from Irish people living in Ireland. Not sure how that counters what I've said (unless terrorist attacks are trending towards zero, or near enough).Cormac wrote:rEvolutionist wrote:This is the future, while ever people are left behind by social and political systems.
