Illegal migration is common even in more settled times. So they would want to stop that en masse. But any nation with all this talk of war would want to be in the most advantageous position if it should come to it.

If the North fell, which it would if there was actually war (I'm betting there won't be) the Chinese would want the north to remain in its 'sphere' rather than become an ally of the USA and would move swiftly to make sure of that. The danger, remote though it is, would be a potential confrontation between China and the USA.

What's this bizzo about China troops at the border? Something must be in the wind if they are putting people there. Someone is going to lob a missile soon, aren't they? Actually, it would be a logical progression. NK seems to be calling US's bluff. Lob a small non-nuke missile at some uninhabited SK island and see what happens.

Case 1: NK is just bluffing. They know the US would glass them if they toss bombs at us. Kim knows this and won't try anything.

Case 2: Kim has begun to believe his own bullshit. In that case he might actually believe he could win against the US. End result will not be pretty.

Case 3: Kim is behaving like any alpha male primate, and after banging his chest and making a ruckus for a while, will either calm down and return to his pack, or if he feels threatened enough start performing false attacks against the perceived enemy. E.g. attack peripheral SK (not US) targets, like NK has done before. If this happens it's all down to SK and the US to respond in a responsible way.

Attacks on SK would come under case 1 above.

Attacks on SK would come under case 2 above.

What do you mean "we," white man?

My current question is whether the Chinese troops massing at the NK border are there to join NK's aggression or simply to blockade a mass exodus.

In the 15 years that I've been in SK, my students never wanted to talk about the NK situation. This week, two students brought the topic up without any suggestion from me. One said she had a nightmare about it, the other said that SK women shouldn't be required to serve in combat in a war, but only to provide support services such as food preparation and nursing. There seems to be a lot more concern these days. Not saying a war is imminent; just reporting the local mindset.
Are they protesting the US presence? http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=3 ... 75,8514729 They can't be happy until the US is gone...

US bolsters missile defense? Pshawww!!!

We know that missile defense is just not feasible. It will never work. It's impossible. :tea:

I hope they know what they're doing, introducing this unworkable placebo technology....

That was 13 years ago. When NK is intense, that sort of shit disappears... ;)

Just like the opposition to US military development. Now, the missile defenses are being trotted over -- we've got destroyers going -- B-2 bombers and making passes overhead -- lol. Good thing we've got those things, eh?

A conversation about whether North Korea's threat is just rhetoric came up on ABC Radio National today. I thought of this thread, but I only caught a couple of minutes as I was just arriving at work ..
