Police shoot dangerous escaped cow in Lincolnshire

Police marksmen have shot a dangerous cow that escaped from a field near Grantham after they chased it around several roads near a school.

The loose cow was first reported to the police at around 2.45pm on Monday, and officers followed it around various roads and streets, whilst the animal became increasingly distressed and aggressive.

The Belgian blue cow jumped fences and ran towards members of the public and police officers on several occasions.

Police officers consulted the RSPCA and the owner of the animal in an effort to resolve the matter peacefully, but it became apparent that the animal posed a real danger to the public.

(continued, not Thatcher this time...close though.) :coffee:

I find that putting a sack over their heads usually subdues the unruly ones.

Maybe it would work with cows too?

 Police chasing it around the roads for two hours. No wonder it was getting distressed and aggressive.

Why is it that when I scanned this thread title, the first words that came to mind were "Maggie Thatcher"? :smug:

Cows are not aggressive as a general rule.. also do they not have tranquilizer darts in the UK?

We do but we use them as recreational drugs. Not wasting them on cows or beef lasagne stock.

Klr is of course right. If the title of this fred had appeared as a headline in the UK media in about 1979, some of us would have been very happy. We'd have been even happier to see such a headline at any time over the next decade, as our worst apprehensions were exceeded.

They do, but they aren't as simple as people think. They need a lot of planning, before use.
The right drug for the right animal, in the right dose. And they are extremely lethal to humans, so not to be taken lightly.

That's why they are hardly ever used in situations like this. I watched a tv program where a cow went mad and on the run, like this case, and they followed a vet who tried to tranquillise it. They still ended up having to shoot it.

You estimate the size of the cow, find the right dosage from a chart, shoot it with a tranq dart. Very easy. They do it with bears all the time.

So, there's a one-to-one between weight and dosage?
