The podcaster calls this scene "date rape." He says "he date rapes her."

He takes issue with this song -- this is 'horrible.' Guys thinking a hot car will get them some pussy? Shocking.

Then he takes issue with car racing. What's the point of car racing? LOL. HOrrible, horrible horrible -- says the podcaster.

Then the podcaster calls Olivia Newton John's character a 'whore' because she decides to dress in black tight pants and a leather jacket.

This message of the final scene apparently is "awful" and "horrible to the podcaster --

The Bird is the Word, actually.

Haven't you heard?

Oh, I was under the impression that you had heard, about the bird...

That's all I need, images of Family Guy running through my head for the next two hours. :lay:

It wasn't a bad movie in its time. About three centuries back. :coffee:

and, here I thought the end of the movie was about how he showed her he cared enough to want to change from the bad boy to the more respectable boy, and that she realized she could be a bad girl too and that they wanted each other -- he better shape up (for her) - and she'll be his -- because they're both "the one that I want."

The movie is about high school love -- she has a romance with the guy who is then suprised to see her at his school. He reacts badly, trying to impress his friends because he is supposed to be a tough guy and his friends would be surprised to hear about him being romance-boy and such. Shocking incidents occur as they get together and break up in a fiery relationship (rare for young love, I know), and on one instance in a drive in, he makes a hard pass at her which she rejects and she leaves him there, embarrassed in public. Later he realizes she's the one for him and he decides to change his ways, be an athlete, be respectable, etc. She also realizes she's the one for him, and decides to let her kinky side out and be a bad girl. They realize they stepped toward each other, pledge that they are each the one that they want, and then fly off into the future in a 57 Chevy.

...either that, or it's about rape, repression of women, virgin shaming, slut shaming, sexism, misogyny and the patriarchy...

It's values reflect it's rather vulgar era. Nice movie though. Good camera angles and very convincing performances. Wouldn't fly today but then the same could be said about the steam train. :coffee:
