Any major tourist attraction is a 'monument' in my book.

This. The Lascaux cave paintings are both art and a source of history. The same is true of hill figures. But this is never really going to be of benefit to future generations. It's just a bloody eyesore, something where it shouldn't be. There are plenty of wells to paint colourful graffiti on if you want to do that.

graffitti "artists" are the kind of artists I'd send to decorate walls between Pyongyang and Singapore

We don't need to paint on rocks because we have man-made structures to paint on. We've already wiped out or tamed much of the natural world. One of the main attractions of the Cliffs of Moher is that they're natural. Even the the new visitor's centre was built in such a way that it blended into the landscape and did not obstruct or attract attention away from the cliffs themselves.

The cliffs are huge, and dangerous. It's unlikely any artist could cover much-- and that little bit shown in the OP is quite pretty. It's not vulgar text or icons of hate or what-have-you. The view is still grand and stunning.

And I can't believe you've never gone, klr. You're right there. I live across the ocean and I've seen them! Take a morning off and go.

It's art. I think it should be preserved for posterity so future species, probably intelligent apes of some kind, can glimpse the grandeur of our intellectual and spiritual expression.

Bah, it's the sort of witless crayoning one can see on the side of every railway cutting and on every bridge support in Blighty.
