Richard !!! Dug Up Edition

Post by cronus » Mon Feb 04, 2013 8:13 pm

I guess someone must have noticed this on the news? Who reckons it was him? And was he really such a bad lad? Did he deserve the car park plot? And how'd they know about the car park way back then anyhow?

Doesn't mean he should have been King? What about the kids he locked in the tower?

Pfft.

It proves nothing except that the corpse was a Plantagenet.

They were ten a penny back in 1485. Edward IV got about a bit.

Mind you, so did Richard: one legitimate son (pre-deceased him) plus at least one bastard son and daughter (acknowledged and honoured).

I reckon the "identification" is just so much wishful thinking.

But the car park was at the site of the church where historically it was held he'd been buried-- near the battlefield where he fell. And the corpse had a hunchback. So, yeah, that with the mitochondrial DNA makes me think they got they right body.

There was nothing wrong with either arm of the corpse in question, so Shakespeare was off the mark there.

You catch me in one of my (very rare) areas of expertise.

If you're really interested, I'd suggest starting with The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey and maybe go on from there. At all costs, ignore Horace Walpole and Thomas More.

Oh, and don't believe a word Shakespeare tells you either. It's a fine play dramatically, but I wouldn't trust Shakespeare to tell me that the sky was blue and the grass green unless I'd been to the window to check for myself.

I know Shakespeare was a PR man, not a historian.

Still, could you sum up the argument for me?
