Back on topic: I would ban the use of girly names like "Mary" for boys, which seems to be an Irish disease, albeit a very rare one now. :mob:

Wasn't it usually as a second name?
It was, but eventually the unfortunate boy would get "found out" at school, and never be able to live it down.
Perhaps they thought there might be a plenary indulgence out of such suffering in this vale of tears.

There are some unisex names. :dunno: Some may lean toward one gender more than the other, but I've known male Frans and Stacys and female Seans and Chrises...

I just assume mental retardation when I encounter strange made up names. Certainly speeds up the interview process by tossing those ones out.

Sean is a boys name. It is an Irish name, and only for boys. Any girls named Sean are a female version of a boy named Sue.

I knew a girl named Shawn.
And plenty of Shawnas.
But I've never met a Sean who was a woman.

I think Courtney's really unfortunate if you're a man (sorry, Courtney Vance.)
And at this point I think Robin/Robyn should only be for women.

I think Lee might be the only truly androgynous name left.

Yeah. It's called "Kiss feeding." It's supposed to promote bonding, and healthy gut flora, or some such bullshit.

Poor kid. There are videos all over the onlines.

Cultures don't die, though. They change. To "preserve" a culture through mandates is to suggest that the culture people create on their own is inferior or less deserving of existence than the culture people created on their own in a previous time.

I mean -- English went through the transition from Old English to Middle English to Modern English, and endured the Great Vowel Shift and whatnot. If we had language preservationists in play, they'd want us to still speak and write like Beowulf.

Cultures change and eventually what was once our culture is no more. Like life and death, it is part of the way of things. I see no reason to waste a minute forcing people to talk and act in accordance with one culture as opposed to another.
English evolved over time, and the culture associated with it evolved in tandem. That doesn't happen when a language dies out. Cultures are closely bound to languages, and cultures die when languages stop being used.

I expect you to feel the same about Satchel Allen (both Woody and Mia ought to have been deprived of all parental rights once they named a kid like that)

As a first name? In France, where it was common to give several names to a kid, only the first being in common use, adding "Mary Joseph" as an ending was super common. My father was Alan Mary Joseph for the birth bureau, and my mother Marie-France Margaret Josepha... same thing in different variants for my plethora of uncles and aunts.

I am quite certain it hasn't hurt her a bit. I always found her kind of hot.

Now, Dweezil, Diva and Ahmet Zappa on the other hand....

@Bella -- the thing is, I think "Moon Zappa" - sounds kind of nice, actually. The "Unit" bit I don't like so much. But, I don't think naming a kid Moon is too bad. There are kids around named Apple, January, and that kind of stuff. Moon sounds o.k. by comparison, lol.

Goddammit, Bella! Is that a recent picture in your profile???? Do you ever plan to age? Or are you leaving that up to the painting in your attic...? :{D You look 25, for fuck's sake.
Many years ago, a hippy couple of my acquaintance named there firstborn Rainforest. I thought it a bit silly, but would be very annoyed with a government that prohibited it.

I suppose prohibiting names containing serious swear words or libellous references is inevitable, but other than that, governments can fuck off...

It's better than Blanket.

I think Blanket is the worst I've heard.

Besides, Satchel is a name. What about Satchel Paige?
