That's how you still see people with names like Vigdis, Finnbogi, Thormund or Grim, that should have passed away with christianisation... not a bad thing to cling to good habits.

They should have had cultural preservation ministries in the middle ages. Then we'd still be saying "forsooth" and "whither goest thine...."Svartalf wrote:That's how you still see people with names like Vigdis, Finnbogi, Thormund or Grim, that should have passed away with christianisation... not a bad thing to cling to good habits.

One of those is to give them a name that will allow them to function in society. Calling a child Fuckwit Shithead is going to make that somewhat difficult
Parents do have rights relative to their children, though, even in the UK.
Well the gov does seem to call rights 'parental responsibility' but its generally not a freedom to do something more an obligation. Children have rights its parents job to ensure that are upheld. A child has a right to an education, its a parents job (and society in general) to ensure they get it

I believe some variety of Jaden/Jayden is currently the #1 name for baby boys in America.Coito ergo sum wrote:I hate the name Jayden as much as I hate the line of names like Shamiqua and Tamiqua.
Shamiqua and Tamiqua are fine. No worse than super-white names like Chad or Travis or Todd.

That's alright for birds, but not mammals.
Now someone's going to remind me that some mammals do in fact feed their young like this.

Some mammals do, in fact, feed their young like that. Alicia Silverstone, for one.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

And I was ready for that as well.laklak wrote:Some mammals do, in fact, feed their young like that. Alicia Silverstone, for one.

Back on topic: I would ban the use of girly names like "Mary" for boys, which seems to be an Irish disease, albeit a very rare one now.

Wasn't it usually as a second name?
And of course, there was Marion Morrison. (I suppose, without the second "a" it is probably a boys name, but it always seemed a bit "boy named Sue" to me...

It was, but eventually the unfortunate boy would get "found out" at school, and never be able to live it down.Cormac wrote:klr wrote:And I was ready for that as well.laklak wrote:Some mammals do, in fact, feed their young like that. Alicia Silverstone, for one.![]()

Yup, I'd thought of that one as well. He got the "Marion" from his grandfather, so you'd have to back a bit to find out what was really going on with that. But there/are have been other male Marions - Marion Barry for example:Cormac wrote: And of course, there was Marion Morrison.
