I thought Jurassic Park was transferred to film fairly flawlessly... although action-flicks aren't particularly challenging. Although the special effects (at the time) did anyone's imagination impressive justice.

In occasional films, even if some stuff from the book is left out, you get a very similar feeling from the book and the film. To a fair extent, I think Jurassic Park managed that...

It may have captured the essence perfectly, I don't know not having read the book.

How, my point here is that people will carp about things being left out and the more complex and lengthy the book the more chances they have to do so. LOTR, no Tom Bombadil, for example. (Personally, I thought that was a derail in the book except for one thing.)
