Mythbusters.

Post by Deep Sea Isopod » Fri Jan 25, 2013 7:09 pm

My kids are addicted to this. The Tivo box is full of Mythbusters episodes.

I'm just wondering if it's a good tool to teach kids critical thinking skills?

I think so. They puzzle out lots of different things.

They taught me how to survive on a desert island with only a crate of duct tape.

I have gone through periods of being very addicted to the show. Not watched it in a while, though. The biggest problem with Mythbusters (shared by many other shows) is the constant preluding of what they're going to be covering. They're written for people with very short attention spans (or the broadcasting of adverts between every sentence).

"Tory is going to be finding out if things that go bang actually go bang" (said with a voice bred to sell things on a doorstep)
(clip of Tory doing something related to that comment)
"And, will the things that go bang actually go bang?" (in dramatic voice, often heard on a car sales lot)
(clip of Tory doing something vaguely bang-related)

Chop/change/splice.... Argh! :irate: Start the show, work through it sequentially... then end the show.

That aside, it is a good show for skeptical thinkers. The main hosts (Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage) are both atheists.

I thought you were joking until I I asked the kids. They confirmed your story. :ddpan:

Adam and Jamie have the single best job on the planet.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

You bet. They use science and math and then demonstrate how valuable both are in a very practical and usable sense, and they stimulate imagination.

One of the best shows on TV in my opinion.
"Seth is Grandmaster Zen Troll who trains his victims to troll themselves every time they think of him" Robert_S

"All that is required for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." Edmund Burke

"Those who support denying anyone the right to keep and bear arms for personal defense are fully complicit in every crime that might have been prevented had the victim been effectively armed." Seth

They didn't quite survive. They ended back on the island on their duct-raft. :hehe:

They didn't say they'd survive there indefinitely. Almost every castaway's hope is to leave his/her prison.
