Yes Prime Minister? Nooooooooo!
New series starting on 'Gold' (a bad sign to begin with). The original Yes Minister and Yes PM were brilliantly written and are watchable even thirty years later. A hard act to follow.
Sadly they haven't. It is truly dreadful.

Stay well away from the new one. It is embarrassingly bad. I'm watching it to the end just to be sure, but I don't really want to!Bella Fortuna wrote:Eeek! I adored the original series and still watch them.

The real trouble with the new one is that you can hear the original actors saying the lines - and so much better!

Who's in it? Anyone that anyone might be expected to have heard of? And are they simply rehashing the old scripts with inferior actors and more modern cultural references, or trying to provide a genuinely original version of the same kind of show?

The original was a sublime combination of clever, witty lines and actors who fitted their roles to perfection.
The producers of the new version are certain to be money-grubbing hacks with all the creative abilities of a slug.

Eeek. Something to avoid then. Any old series that is relaunched on Dave or Gold is usually bad news.Rum wrote:New series starting on 'Gold' (a bad sign to begin with). The original Yes Minister and Yes PM were brilliantly written and are watchable even thirty years later. A hard act to follow.

The Thick of It is the natural successor to Yes (Prime) Minister. The basic subject matter is the same - the incompetence and dishonesty of politicians. But it's done in a completely different way, such that it seems to echo modern politics perfectly.
I went out and bought the complete DVD boxed set.Bella Fortuna wrote:Eeek! I adored the original series and still watch them.

I've had it for years.
In fact, I just donated my old VHS copy to charity last Saturday after many years of hoping I'd find some loving home for it.

Actually the new show surprised me by being quite amusing. The script was solid and the performances decent. Not a patch on the original, but then, what is.

It is my contention that with regards to Parliamentary politics, there tends to be one ore two series or performers that capture the political zeitgeist and become stale quickly outside of that. Yes Minister and Spitting Image and Ben Elton for the tories during the 80's/90's Rory Bremner and The Thick of it in the 90/00's.
