The idiocy of this article is exemplified by this bit of stupidity:
Of 14,478 guns equipped with large-capacity magazines that were confiscated by police, more than 87 percent — 12,664 — were classified as semiautomatic pistols. The remainder were mostly semiautomatic rifles.
Keep in mind that 87 percent were handguns with "high capacity" magazines. But at the time, "high capacity" is anything over 10 rounds, an entirely arbitrary number pulled from the asses of anti-gun senators like Biden.

The problem is that many handguns, particularly 9mm and smaller, come from the factory with STANDARD magazines that hold from 12 to 16 rounds. This means that the seizure of the most common caliber of handgun, the 9mm, would almost always result in a "high capacity magazine" report because "high capacity" is deliberately set at the arbitrary number of ten rounds.

What this means is that the whole "high capacity magazine" farce is exactly that, a farce concocted by anti-gun zealots in an attempt to demonize common handguns.

Load 'o crap as usual.

HOUSTON -- A couple of strangers came to the rescue when a man was robbed at gunpoint. Now, the victim wants to say thank you to the Good Samaritans.

Police believe the criminal who was canvassing a neighborhood in the 2500 block of Wichita near Hermann Park had no idea what he was in for when he picked his target.

The victim in this case had just walked back to his car from a bar around the corner.

Kevin Dorsey says he hadn’t even closed his car door Thursday night when a man wearing all black and a ski mask put a gun to his chest. The man took Dorsey’s wallet, cell phone and car keys.

After he was robbed, Dorsey began running down the street and says two men in a Mercedes asked him what had happened.

Dorsey told them and they not only caught up with the suspect, but they started shooting at him.

The suspect fired back. In the end, the two witnesses turned vigilantes won and took down the bad guy.

“I don’t believe in guns,” said Dorsey. “I don’t own a gun. I’m totally at the mercy of my saviors. They obviously sent two angels to help me. These people protected me when I couldn’t protect myself.”

After the robber had been shot, police say he jumped over a fence and was attacked by a German Shepherd. That attack prevented him from getting away.

The suspect, identified as Christopher Hutchins, is being treated at Ben Taub Hospital. He’s expected to recover.

The bad guy was actually apprehended by a Shepherd, young Seth, and a German one at that. And yet you and the victim want to thank two passing angels with guns? Does God know two of his minions were packing heat in contravention of His law?

He was wounded in a gunfight with two armed citizens after firing on them, and there is no evidence that the citizens were unlawfully armed. Apprehending a dangerous armed criminal is not "vigilantism," it's good citizenship.

Looks like the prevailing attitude towards victims these days is becoming, "Fuck 'em." I wonder if the victim in this case had been a young, pretty, blond, caucasian female with child how the attitudes would change. :coffee: That said, the guy who got robbed should've been prepared to take care of himself instead of depending on good Samaritans.

So many ways for such a situation to end in tragedy; mistaken identity, innocent bystanders hit, even the criminal killed - street robbery is not a capital offence...

Fuck guns!

I sympathize with your motivation, Jim, but more people die in the US from being beaten with baseball bats, if I recall someone else's stats correctly. But I don't hear anyone saying, "Fuck baseball bats!" or suggesting criminalizing their ownership. I'd be more apt to say "Fuck irresponsible gun owners." One of the first things you learn in firearm training is to always be sure of your backdrop so that the bullet doesn't endanger bystanders. From the sound of that story, the two guys who stepped in to help the victim did a good enough job of that, even while being fired upon. I'm willing to bet that even if the criminal had gotten away, he'd be looking for another line of "work."

Well, we'll have to agree to differ. I am bloody glad to live in a society where well-meaning bystanders are not going to use guns like characters from a B-grade western...

Understood. Agreeing to disagree is good. And I admit that I am a lot more relaxed over here in Korea because I know there aren't armed criminals running around. But there are in the US, and until that problem is solved, when I am Stateside I'll have at least one firearm around to protect myself. And if the unlikey opportunity were to arise, I'd use it to defend someone else from those criminals. Not B-movie bravado, just a willingness to help others in distress.
