Russia's Navy accepted their first new-construction ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) since 1992 today, the Yury Dolgoruky.

The Borei Class is fairly impressive. Now that the Russians have ironed out the bugs in the Bulava SLBM, it's pretty much comparable to the best in the West. The Bulava SLBM has a 9,000 Km range, which means it can hit targets over a fair amount of the USA without the submarine having to leave port, if the sub is stationed in the neighbourhood of Vladivostok or Sakhalin Island. Under the polar ice cap, it could probably hit anything in the USA with ease. In addition, the Bulava carries MaRV warheads - up to 10 of them - which, along with various decoys, makes the weapon a formidable one.

The sub itself is capable of 25 knots underwater, and, being nuclear powered, won't need refuelling for 10 years. The only limitation on endurance during a tour of duty is the same limitation that affects our subs - how much food can be carried for the crew. If they've found a way of extending that to, say, 120 days, instead of the 72 that's typical for an Ohio Class boat, then they've got something militarily useful.
