This has to be one of the first generations that look back at earlier generations and thinks that old people had it easy, affordable housing, free education (UK), permanent long term employment.

I'm probably going to be one of last group of people who can buy their own place without parental support or being very high up in their profession.

Housing is more affordable now -- in the US -- than ever. With the crash in the real estate market, houses are going for less than construction cost all over the country. You can't get much more affordable. And, interest rates on mortgages are incredibly low -- 4% or so is commonplace. In the 1980s, rates were 8% and up. In 1979 and 1980 you would see 12% and up in terms of mortgage interest rates, and much higher for automobiles and such.

There never was such a thing as permanent long term employment, but there are FAR more job security protections in the US and in the UK today than there were, say, in the 1960s.

I have no doubt that the 20 somethings think the older generation had it easy. They're just as right about that as they about how good at math they are.... :smoke:

When was this time when young people without money could buy their own place without parental support. It was much harder just 20 years ago for a person to get a mortgage. Now they hand them out like candy, no money down, low interest. Anybody getting out of college that hasn't already fucked up their credit can buy a house in the US.

Ever hear of the Flynn Effect?

Even with the recession and stable house prices typical mortgage 3 x salary , basic flat/apartment 6 x average salary rising to stupid multiples for an actual family homes.

Throw in unemployment and the situation is truely appalling, one of the reasons we have young people going out and drinking so much. They do have money for entertainment but with no realistic chance of ever saving enough (even by budgeting) of every buying their own place. Average age of first buyer 35 expected to reach 40 by the end of the decade (no wonder average age of a woman having a first child is 30)

They cannot be much worse than My Generation. I wish they'd all just f-ff--f--fade away.

:{D

Seriously though, we can't look at a generation in their youth, just because the baby boomers and Gen X were a bunch of self indulgent slaves to entitlement, "cool" and their public personas in their twenties doesn't mean all of them ended up as Wavy Gravy or John Lydon. Give the dumbshits a break they're having fun and growing pains. Reality will cut through for most of them.

And it will be fucking delicious to watch.

Perhaps it's just that teenagers always suck, no matter what decade you're in.
