Should Denmark give Greenland to Canada, or to Iceland?

Not singlehandely but yes. She was big buds with Pinochet, so it wouldn't surprise me if she had links to Galtieri (especially as Galtieri was like she was, in cahoots with Reagan) who was also suffering from lack of popularity back in Argentina and his society was unravelling around him too.Coito ergo sum wrote:

There was mutual benefit.

She coordinated it? Made it happen? What was her role? How do you know?Audley Strange wrote:Not singlehandely but yes.Coito ergo sum wrote:

Ah, the "big buds" thing -- so and so was "buddies" with such and such monstrous dictator. Operates as a good shortcut allowing conclusions to be reached without actual facts.Audley Strange wrote: She was big buds with Pinochet,
It wouldn't surprise you if she had "links?" What's a "link?" As far as it goes, I wouldn't be surprised if any world leaders were communicating and such. That's a far cry from saying she organized the Falkland Islands War on purpose.Audley Strange wrote: so it wouldn't surprise me if she had links to Galtieri (especially as Galtieri was like she was, in cahoots with Reagan) who was also suffering from lack of popularity back in Argentina and his society was unravelling around him too.
The benefit to Argentina from being drawn into a losing war was what? There was mutual benefit.

Simply not true. I was as anti-Thatcherite as they come. She was a dreadful community smashing zealot, but she was taken by surprise by the invasion, so I am not taking sides. Here's a link to a story about recently released papers (under the 30 year rule).Audley Strange wrote:Not singlehandely but yes. Do you think that the Argies will respect the (inevitable) outcome of the referendum, or do you think they will continue to contest the islands?

The haven't respected the previous votes of the islanders on the subject, so why would they respect this one?JacksSmirkingRevenge wrote:Do you think that the Argies will respect the (inevitable) outcome of the referendum, or do you think they will continue to contest the islands?

No no, I recalled certain people like Michael Heseltine claiming she had been in discussions with Galtieri since '79 and others who said that the two had a friendly relationship.Rum wrote:Simply not true. I did read them. I have also read this... http://www.margaretthatcher.org/document/112605 and the reports from Alexander Haig who was dumfounded by the Argentinians actions considering previous negotiations.
I take back what I said. It has been made obvious that it was only Galiteiri that was using it for political expediency since his advisors were convinced we'd let them go. Thatcher just took advantage of it.
I retract my previous post.

Edit- I say "last time" but have there been any referendum since the main conflict 30 years ago?

So? And, so? I'm sure Thatcher had discussions with Brezhnev of the Soviet Union too, does that mean she was involved in the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan because they were "buds?"Audley Strange wrote:

I just realized I don't know much about what hardware England operates these days. Are you blokes flying Eurofighters?

There are some on the Falkland Islands, whatever state the British military is the Argentinian one is in a far worse state. They are still using the same kit from 1982Făkünamę wrote:I just realized I don't know much about what hardware England operates these days. Are you blokes flying Eurofighters?

The Argies are stupid.. they should start floating 'refugees' over to the islands on wooden doors to subvert the voting population.
