The fact that you even have to have a moment to think and reflect on skin colour, amused, tells me that you're pretty racist yourself, even if latently.

Yeah, but he says as much. The post sounds like he's had some experiences that have opened his eyes.

I think that statement would be stronger without making personal attacks on other people here.

Well it's not true to say they Irish aren't racist at all. There certainly are racist Irish people. I remember as a child my friend's older brother told us a racist joke. It went, "How do you hide a nigger in a coal bunker?" The answer was, "Knock his teeth out."
My other friend's laughed but I had to say, "I don't get it." He told me it was because their teeth were white and whould show up in the dark or similar. I got it then but I just didn't find it funny. I guess it was just because it was never brought up in my house. My parents always listened to black music and watched black comedy so I guess I never saw them as anything different.

I was deeply shocked and saddened in the 90s when a black family (keeping in mind Ireland was generally without black people up 'til then) moved in next door, they were from Africa, and I overheard my parents giving out about them and calling them "niggers" and everything. It was a side of them I didn't know was there. I guess they were fine with black people as long as they didn't live on their doorstep.

Well, I have to confess I didn't believe you about the whole "Irish aren't racist" thing. But...

I need to look up some links when I can be bothered. I'm pretty sure at one point you vehemently argued that the Irish were hardly ever racist, and I countered with the "How would you know, if you're all white? Who is there to be racist about?" angle, and you were all "no, no..."

Well, Irish racism is funny because a lot of it is borrowed from English/American racism. Some Irish people even slag red-haired people not realising that they are parroting English racism toward Irish people. We don't have that deep racism a lot of Europe and America have. We've no KKK equivalents or anything. Irish are generally hypocritically racist. They'll make fun of foreign people behind their backs but the next day they'd be talking to one. It's a funny situation. Put it this way, you're not going to see an Irish equivalent of American History X, not needed, but you will see in our films little jibes and quips toward foreign sorts.

I went through something very similar when I first moved to Korea in 1996. Asians don't all look the same, nor are they exemplifications of the stereotypes that get kicked around about them. If you think people of a certain persuasion are like that, it's just because you're not looking closely enough.

The issue for me is that Amused coupled a rather obvious (although nonless emotional or important for that) personal revelation with an attack on two others.

1. He himself had just had a scale removed from his eyes that is related to the same scale he accuses the other two of, and therefore, it isn't appropriate to attack those others, but rather a less aggressive and more of an effort to convince tone would be more appropriate, I think.
2. I have never seen Seth say anything remotely racist. I think it outrageous for Seth to be maligned like that.
3. It is a violation of our rules to attack people like this.

Tyrannical is a self-confessed racist, and I consider that to be a fatal and thoroughly despicable flaw in a person's character. Just to put that on record.

Amused, I know where you're coming from. I was raised up in Indiana and I never saw a single black person in any of my classes at school. I never saw in the towns we lived in. I'm certain this was a conscious decision on the Y-donor's part. It wasn't until I was in the Navy and thrown into a bunch of guys from diverse backgrounds that I actually talked to a black man. We were, I suspect, deliberately mixed, ~50% from backgrounds like mine and ~50% from NYC. Thing about boot camp is that you don't have time for culture clashes, you're too busy trying to make the cut. In 9 weeks I went from "who the fuck are you?" to thinking about which of these guys I would be willing to trust with my life. Color didn't enter into that.

Seth has a black girlfriend, if one wishes to believe the things he says. He may be a lot of things, but the old fellow is not a racist, I'll grant him that.

Funny thing about racism. It runs deep in hidden veins. My mother was always very liberal minded, and I grew up in the 60s and 70s. So race was never a big deal to me. My mother divorced my father in large part, in fact, because he was so racist and she found that distasteful. When one of my sisters brought over a black friend one day after school, my mom was delighted. And yet I brought a book home to read at one point, The Autobiography of Miss Harriet Tubman, and my mother was horrified. "Why are you reading that," she said.
I was very confused. Why shouldn't I be reading that? What's wrong with reading that
