Richard Dawkins: banned in Oklahoma?

Post by Animavore » Fri Mar 06, 2009 5:58 pm

From Pharyngula:
Richard Dawkins: banned in Oklahoma?

Category: Creationism

He's on his way to Oklahoma (no, that's not what rouses my envy), and an Oklahoma legislator has proposed a resolution to condemn him.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 1ST SESSION OF THE 52ND OKLAHOMA LEGISLATURE:

THAT the Oklahoma House of Representative strongly opposes the invitation to speak on the campus of the University of Oklahoma to Richard Dawkins of Oxford University, whose published statements on the theory of evolution and opinion about those who do not believe in the theory are contrary and offensive to the views and opinions of most citizens of Oklahoma.

THAT the Oklahoma House of Representatives encourages the University of Oklahoma to engage in an open, dignified, and fair discussion of the Darwinian theory of evolution and all other scientific theories which is the approach that a public institution should be engaged in and which represents the desire and interest of the citizens of Oklahoma.
Wow. This from the same crowd that gets all fluttery and happy at "academic freedom" bills — they want to kick Richard Dawkins out of the whole state. I thought I was the scary one when I was the guy getting kicked out of a mere movie theater.

I guess I expect no better from those inbred douchebags. I mean... Oklahoma? Anyone worth a shit would move out of that state as soon as they possibly could.. There are really only about five states in the U.S. that aren't completely embarrassing.

I guess the next time I hear the name "Oklahoma" being mentioned, I won't immediately think of a bright golden haze on the meadow ...

... which is good. ;)

In all seriousness though, I despair of people like this holding elected office. :banghead:

Oddly enough, no. The U.S. of A has never been a popular destination for my family that I know of. Our far-flung relatives tend to be elsewhere - I have more Australian cousins than Irish. And for work, it was Britain, the European mainland, or Australia.

There was one time back in 1986 when some guy claiming to be our long lost "cousin Tim" rang us from Rapid City, South Dakota. It turned out he wasn't really sure who he was related to, just that he shared a family name with us - and he was a likely basket case. We couldn't get him off the phone fast enough, especially as we were trying to watch a World Cup match from Mexico at the time.

Apparently not. It's times like this when I'm glad to live in Ireland. When compared to Hicksville, USA*, most parts of Ireland are an enlightened paradise by comparison.

*By which I mean just parts of the USA of course, not the whole lot.

Yes civilized sheep shaggers over there, eh? And I would hardly call a long lasting campaign of terrorism from the IRA "civilized".

But I would rather be in Dublin any day, than in Norman, Oklahoma.

I didn't say we were civilized. I was just contesting the braggarts comments. ;)

What makes you think I'd have any sympathy with the IRA or it's ilk?

And I did say most parts of Ireland. There are parts of deepest darkest Ireland that I'm not too fond of either, but on balance I'd rather be in any of them than in Bible Belt country.

Where in the article Myers quoted does it say that? Is Oklahoma Uni a state now? Fucking hyperbolic twisting of the facts getting in the way of dealing with the real issues and hindering genuine progress. Tabloid junk.
