What else do you expect? 'Society' is about interest groups and their power. Not much else.

Oh I expect nothing else Rum. However prior to that and even now, both the left and the right still cling on to the idea that we exist in a single one and most people perpetuate an archaic voting model based on a pre-modern version of "society" and "Britain" and ALL of them are conservative when you start challenging it.

Well obviously I'm not stating facts, so I may well be wrong, but it does seem to me that your "schoolboy" version so to speak is what people believe in, which is why I consider it a religious faith in a conceptual authority.

We all have a conceptual model of how this stuff woks (if we think at all about it!) I think, even if it isn't particularly formal or academic. Mine is Marxist, which isn't strictly speaking a political model at all, but a social one - concerning the power relationships within populations. You and I probably would agree on how Marxism explains the current power relationships between those who hold it and those who are subject to it and how we can have democracy without it being truly representative or in the interests of the majority.
