What made her effective was she had a scientific background amongst a pack of bantering buffoons. That didn't stop her building on flood plains or anything though...sometimes I wonder if she was infested by aliens...her reign being so odd.

Oh I expect nothing else Rum. However prior to that and even now, both the left and the right still cling on to the idea that we exist in a single one and most people perpetuate an archaic voting model based on a pre-modern version of "society" and "Britain" and ALL of them are conservative when you start challenging it.

I'm not sure you are right. Certainly there is a schoolboy version of democracy which holds that we are all part of a large group with an interest in good outcomes for the majority who generally want the best possible outcome for the majority and that we all pop along and vote cheerfully for the people we think will deliver it, but the reality, as you point out is more complicated.

Well obviously I'm not stating facts, so I may well be wrong, but it does seem to me that your "schoolboy" version so to speak is what people believe in, which is why I consider it a religious faith in a conceptual authority.

We all have a conceptual model of how this stuff woks (if we think at all about it!) I think, even if it isn't particularly formal or academic. Mine is Marxist, which isn't strictly speaking a political model at all, but a social one - concerning the power relationships within populations. You and I probably would agree on how Marxism explains the current power relationships between those who hold it and those who are subject to it and how we can have democracy without it being truly representative or in the interests of the majority.

Incidentally, the full quote that follows the "no such thing as society" reduces it from such starkness.

You think? Your government isn't obligated to help you? I dunno. I see what she was getting at, but as I say she was a very very late Victorian, I have no doubt she would have brought in child labour if she thought she could have gotten away with it.

Typical. Thatcher goes in to hospital for an op and the surgeon finds and removes the only non malignant part of her.

Life moves on, if Thatcher is a complete evil bitch then so was the British public for electing her, hopefully we have improved a bit since then
