It wasn't unarmed until about 1921 when Britain started banning handguns. Before then, concealed handguns were quite common in the UK.aspire1670 wrote:That would be the unarmed British Police Service, Seth. Any chance you might join an unarmed police service?Seth wrote:Yup. "Police, at all times, should maintain a relationship with the public that gives reality to the historic tradition that the police are the public and the public are the police; the police being only members of the public who are paid to give full-time attention to duties which are incumbent upon every citizen in the interests of community welfare and existence." Sir Robert Peel, Founder, London Metropolitan Police, the model for every modern law enforcement agency in the civilized world today.Făkünamę wrote:I'm sorry, but did you just describe yourself in some role approximating that of a police officer?Seth wrote:It is real context. Strangely, with all that ammunition and all those guns I've not killed a single school child with any of it, and all of it is 100 percent intended and to be used for protecting the innocent and defenseless.Svartalf wrote:A real context, not brags and insults, you two.
And the point is not what tools one carries, it's where the authority to enforce the law emanates from. Here's a clue: it doesn't emanate from government, because government authority is derived from the consent of the governed, and only from their consent, and all authority emanates from the People to begin with, including the authority to enforce the law, which authority is granted to government on a co-equal basis, it is not abdicated by the People to the government.
In short, government is the servant of the people and has only that power and authority granted to it by the people, a grant which may be revoked at the will of the people and an authority which may be exercised by the people because it is theirs to begin with.

There are limits to freedom of speech. Slander, libel and defamation cases can and do get prosecuted in American law courts. But above and beyond that is the simple rule of courtesy. Kristie is generally very polite and restrained, and does not deserve to be treated in the way you routinely treat others. That is, with a total lack of courtesy or respect.Seth wrote:
And I can chide anyone I want, because the First Amendment says so.
For every human action, there is a rationalisation and a reason. Only sometimes do they coincide.

Yup, and one of the causes of action in libel and slander is telling a lie about someone in a public forum.Blind groper wrote:There are limits to freedom of speech. And Kristie deserves what she got because she succumbed to her baser impulses and joined in the personal attacks on me. Her actions were wrong and she deserved to get spanked for them. If she (and you) act like rational adults and lay off the personal insults, then we'll all get along just fine. Otherwise things can get very nasty indeed...until the mods finally get off their asses and do something.
I've said before that once the insults start I'm not going to sit silently by and be insulted and maligned without responding in kind.
Courtesy is as courtesy does. If you're courteous, I will be courteous as well. It's up to you.
