That's exactly what it is. It doesn't make any substantial difference in a close-range murder of five year olds, which could be just as "lethal" if it were done with a stocked semi-automatic rifle or a can of gasoline.

Armed with an M-14, or a Ruger Mini-14, or any of a dozen different semi-automatic rifles in caliber .223 the carnage would have been just the same. The problem is not the appearance of the weapon or even it's function, it's that nobody else in the whole school had the tools necessary to stop him from shooting ANY kind of gun. He could have done the same thing with handguns, including a couple of six-round revolvers and a bunch of speed loaders. It takes me less than three seconds to reload a Smith & Wesson Model 19, and Jerry Miculek holds the world's record for firing 12 rounds in less than three seconds with a reload.

So to say that a pistol grip on a rifle increases the "lethality" is simply ignorant. It doesn't. It may increase shooting comfort and it may enhance handling and accuracy, but the "lethality" is inherent in the ammunition, not the rifle.

Lethality of any weapon in a given situation is a combination of that weapon's suitability to that situation which is a function of the ergonomics of that weapon, the shooter's ability to bring the weapon on target which is a function of the shooter's ability and the ergonomics of the weapon, the placement of shots which is function of the ergonomics of the weapon, the shooter's ability, and the equipped optics, the rate of accurate fire the shooter is able to sustain which is a function of the ergonomics of the weapon, the shooter's ability, and the equipped optics, and finally, and least important, the ammunition used.
