Given that they are used in pistol ammo too, and that such ammo usually gets fired at closse quarters if it's to hit at all, and that the question is about point blank, not the way rifles are used...
(not to mention that coming from a gun nut like Gallstones, I half thought that the question was actually rhetorical)

Ah! The "point blank" part of her question...I'd forgot about that.

I still think it's hard to answer that question without knowing what the target is.

If "gun lead" (Pb) = slugs, then I'm re-reading the title of the thread. I think it's a good idea to carry bullets with you if you're going to a confrontation. Especially if you have a gun to shoot them with.

In a pinch, I guess, but only if the other guy isn't armed. :stanley:

Snipers shoot very long range. The bullet would have to remain fusiform for most of that distance to get the accuracy a sniper needs.

I would very much like to see a ballistic gel demo.

According to Wiki
"..intended to cause the bullet to expand upon entering a target in order to decrease penetration and disrupt more tissue as it travels through the target.

In modern ammunition, the use of hollow points is primarily limited to handgun ammunition, which tends to operate at much lower velocities than rifle ammunition (on the order of 1,000 feet per second (300 m/s) versus over 2,000 feet per second). At rifle velocities, a hollow point is not needed for reliable expansion and most rifle ammunition makes use of tapered jacket designs to achieve the mushrooming effect. At the lower handgun velocities, hollow point designs are generally the only design which will expand reliably."

So, point blank is max velocity and expansion occurs when entering the target, then there should be max potential expansion from point blank.

Yes?

Seth keeps thumping his chest at me.

Why is it difficult to see that if 47% of the country are entitlement sucking low IQ folk, then 47% of gun owners are as well. You are not protecting some noble savages.

Yes?
If you take the principle to the opposite extreme and push the load into the target slowly, then it wouldn't mushroom. But what is the target you have in mind? A body?

Yes,

What else are guns desinged for?

What do you mean slowly?
You press against and pull the trigger. Nothing slow about that.

How do you know it wouldn't musroom at point blank?
My reading has that soft tissue resistance causes the expansion.
