Catcher in the Rye and TKMockingbird out of American Schools
Well, apparently, in order to pave the way for more non-fiction books, Catcher in the Rye and To Kill A Mockingbird are out. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/book ... culum.html
Well, I have no objection to Catcher in the Rye being eliminated, on general principle of suckage. Holden Caulfield is perhaps literature's biggest toolbag, and the story is pointless and sucks, and the ending is a big nothing and monumentally blows.
But, TKaM? Harper Lee's book is certainly a must read.

To Kill a Mockingbird is an exceptional book. Everyone should read it to their dog.

Don't fucking bother. But, one day you'll be talking to one of these Catcher in the Rye fans, or a Salinger fan in general. Salinger is the fucking worst. But, folks like to say they love him so they sound literary.Animavore wrote:Never read it.
Fucking Franny and Zooey and the rest of the Glass family stories fucking suck hard. It's like Salinger just wanted to write overly literary incomprehensible pointless tripe and see how long he could keep critics ooing and ahhing, pretending that they "get" the bullshit. Fucking Perfect Day for Bananafish my ass.... Fuck You, JD Salinger!!

To Kill a Mockingbird, as Pappa said is exceptional. Atticus rules.

Re: Catcher in the Rye and TKMockingbird out of American Sch
I can understand how TK Mockingbird would resonate with people from Britain and America, two countries dripping with white guilt, but as an Irish person, whose people never harmed anyone except the odd occupational force, I'm not sure it would have the same resonance.

I read Catcher in the Rye and didn't see what the fuss was about at all. It a book about nothing much. It's not even a good "nothing much". If you want a really good "nothing much" book, read Less Than Zero by Brett Easton Ellis.

Never read Catcher in the Rye either. I thought I did for ages but then I realised I was getting mixed up with Of Mice and Men for some reason

Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.

Catcher in the Rye is about a cynical teen douchebag who hates everyone. Yawn.
They should replace Catcher in the Rye with Ham on Rye. It is also about cynical, teen douchebag who hates everyone, but at least it was funny.
They really should keep Mockingbird though.

I just realised Coito thought I meant Catcher in the Rye when I said 'never read it' (a direct response to the last line of his OP) the first time

I grew up in Louisiana at a time when To Kill a Mockingbird was either banned or simply not tolerated. I read it much later in life and enjoyed it as an adult. It's very well written and should be required reading for anyone who wants to be 'well read'. I particularly like the structure of the story whereby the end comes right back to the beginning. I know that's a common joy in readers, so label me common, I don't care.

Really, everything one needs to know is in Enid Blyton.
