The source I linked to implies that it is the most common method of suicide; it doesn't qualify the word with "attempted." If you have data to contradict that, please show it.

By why even accept his assertion Svartalf? His post uses folk wisdom which makes me suspicious e.g. education won't work because everyone knows teenagers don't listen.

Even given that teenagers are at higher risk for loads of bad consequences due to poor judgement, it is not immediately clear to me how that renders education less than a top contender for solutions. Even possibly ahead of specialized government approved safes.

I mean, how many teenagers refuse all instruction despite how dire the consequences? I'm thinking shit loads of teenagers, even those that fall into the category that justifies the folk wisdom, even the worst rebels, can take some lessons to heart and especially those that if ignored could mean certain death.

What impact have gun safety education efforts already had? Are they really so insignificant?

I would have to go back to a series of sources, and frankly, I can't be bothered. Those sources said that drugs were the main method of attempted suicide in the western world. Hanging is a lot more lethal, but a lot less used.

Well, that contradicts my source and unless you produce stats to the contrary, I'll have to surmise that your memory may be faulty on this one. ;)

I will check up on that FBM, and get back to you.

Here is something, though.
http://www.afsp.org/index.cfm?fuseactio ... 3a70de1fda

I quote :

"•Although most gun owners reportedly keep a firearm in their home for "protection" or "self defense," 83 percent of gun-related deaths in these homes are the result of a suicide, often by someone other than the gun owner."

While most people on this thread, FBM, will simply use their emotion based editing system to remove this inconvenient data, I know you will appreciate it.

To FBM

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Failed_suicide_attempt

I quote :

"Some suicide methods have higher rates of failure than others; e.g. wrist-slashing has a much higher failure rate than use of firearms, which has only a 10% failure rate. 75% of all suicide attempts are by the use of drugs, a method that is often thwarted by using nonlethal drugs or nonlethal dosages. These people are found alive 97% of the time."

Today I fired a gun for the first time. It was Glock 19 Gen 4 - we rented it at the gun range. 'Zilla says I did really well - all my shots hit the target which was 10 feet away and all but one of them hit the silhouette. Most of my shots were a bit low and to the left, but I'm sure that will change with practice. We brought the target home, pix to follow eventually. I think I'm going to like shooting - but there is no way I'm giving up my Liberal card. :levi:

You did remarkably well for a n00b. By your second clip you were getting a good pattern, all "disabling" hits. You made rapid progress while we were in the aisle. I think you'll be a natural when you've popped a few thousand caps. :{D

One year from now we'll compare today's target to that day's.

Good on you. I would quite like to fire a pistol at a range (rented, I'd never want to own one, and couldn't in Oz anyway... :hehe: )

But there aren't many ranges around here...
